5 out of 5 starsI searched high and low for a book ornament for my son that was well made and beautiful. This was perfect. And the shop owner was great about customizing it with the year. We will enjoy it for years to come.

In 2011, I did an artist talk at the Wood Gallery Summer Art Camp in Montpelier, VT. I love talking books with kids.

I freely admit that it is impossible to keep my worktable clean. I'm easily distracted by bright colors.

Ahhh...a clean studio.

Books in progress, basking in the sun.

The bone folder is an indispensable tool for bookbinding. I cherish my collection, which includes some I made myself.
Everyone has a story to tell...tell yours.
So here's my story...
I entered the world of bookbinding in the 2nd grade with my first creation,“ The Dog Who Couldn’t Bark,” using oak tag, construction paper, and staples. The cover and pages were cut into the shape of a dog.
I wouldn’t revisit the craft until I was in graduate school studying Art Therapy. I worked part-time at a store named Paper Source, a store in Cambridge, MA. The craft had a great effect on me – I ending up writing my graduate thesis on using bookbinding in the Expressive Therapies.
Unfortunately, I once again abandoned the book arts after entering the “real world”. A few years later, the company I worked for advertised a craft show where employees could exhibit their work. I thought, “Hey, I remember that time I made books…I liked that. Hmmm…” I started making books again – this time, it stuck.
Blue Roof Designs came to life in 2000. Yes, I live in a house with a blue roof. Actually, it’s the second house I’ve owned with a blue roof.
In my studio in beautiful Montpelier, Vermont you will find me working with handmade papers from around the world, satin and brocade cloths, leather, and silky ribbons. I strive to create books that maintain the beauty and integrity of the materials with which I work. I especially love working with papers that are pieces of art, in and of themselves. All of the materials I use are acid-free to ensure the longevity of your photos.
I really enjoy making blank books – each book is meant to be transformed by the owner. I consider it “accessible art.” The owner of one of my books will put his or her own life experiences into the book, making it truly one-of-a-kind.
I'm honored to be a member of the Bookbinding Etsy Street Team (B.E.S.T.) Check out my feature on the B.E.S.T. blog: http://www.bookbindingteam.com/2010/07/blog-interview-blueroofdesigns.html

Returns and exchange details
I make a conscious effort to pack my work so that damages do not occur during shipment. However, if your order arrives damaged, please contact me as soon as possible so that I can work with you to resolve the issue. I send all packages with insurance so that any damage is covered. Please save all packaging materials in the event that a claim needs to be filed.
I will not accept any returns that result from non-payment of customs and duty fees and/or taxes.
Custom orders are not refundable.
Please contact me directly with any questions or concerns - I want you to be happy and believe strongly in providing excellent customer service.
Payment
Please note that checks from outside of the U.S. can take up to 4 weeks to clear, so please be aware that there may be a lengthy delay in shipping your order.
Vermont residents will be charged 6% sales tax (unless you're lucky enough to purchase on a tax-free holiday). If you live in a Vermont jurisdiction with a local option sales tax (Brandon, Burlington, Colchester, Dover, Killington, Manchester, Middlebury, Rutland Town, St. Albans Town, South Burlington, Stratton, Williston, Wilmington, Winhall), you will be charged 7% sales tax (Vermont state sales tax + 1% local option tax). I know it sucks, but it’s the law and I have to do it.
Shipping
I send all my handmade books insured. I usually ship via USPS (either First Class or Priority Mail) and if not that, then via FedEx. I compare costs before selecting the final method of shipping. I do not send single packs of photo corners with tracking unless specifically requested. The cost is prohibitively expensive and I want to keep your shipping costs reasonable.
If additional costs are incurred after the item has shipped (due to an incorrect or incomplete shipping address), then the buyer is responsible for covering those costs. For example, if an address correction is required, then I will contact you prior to authorizing the correction so that the additional payment can be made.
I’m aware that my shipping costs may seem high. Many of my books are heavy, some weighing at least 2 pounds each. In addition, some of the books are oversized.
I also know that everyone wants free shipping. I have thought about offering free shipping, but I’d rather be transparent about the work, time, and cost of supplies that go into shipping.
I make a point of packing my books really well - I want to make sure you get your book safely and in good shape! I try to reuse shipping materials whenever possible. I only reuse clean fill (bubble wrap, paper, etc.) and boxes that are structurally sound.
International Shipping:
If you are from outside the U.S. and want to make a purchase (and don't see your country listed), please convo me and I'll let you know the shipping cost. I'm happy to work on orders on an individual basis and can post custom listings.
Customers are responsible for all customs and duty fees and/or taxes - listing purchase and shipping costs do not include these fees. Please investigate this possibility before placing your order so that you're not hit with an unpleasant surprise. Returns will not be accepted if these fees are not paid.
By the way, I'm an honest gal, so all customs forms will state the actual value of the item(s) purchased.
Additional policies and FAQs
All of my work is handmade by me. No two pieces are identical and that’s part of the charm of handmade work. Please allow for minor variations in appearance from what is shown in the item listing photos.
A note about materials:
Because many handmade papers are used in the production of my items, variations in inclusions or paper tone may vary. I will make all attempts to ensure consistency through the product styles. In addition, differences in computer monitor settings may affect the appearance of my work on your screen. If you would like a sample of the exact paper/materials that will be used, please let me know. Feel free to contact me regarding any other concerns or questions.
Delayed/lost orders:
Sometimes things get delayed or lost in the mail and it really sucks. As a seller, I want everything about your experience with my shop to go as smoothly as possible and it makes me very unhappy when you're unhappy. I do ask that you wait 10 business days before we officially consider your order lost. In these instances, I will resend your order at my expense or in the event that an item is out of stock, I will refund your full payment.

• to comply with my obligations under the Etsy Seller Policy and Terms of Use.
Information Sharing and Disclosure:
Information about my customers is important to my business. I share your personal information for very limited reasons and in limited circumstances, as follows:
• Etsy: I share information with Etsy as necessary to provide you my services and comply with my obligations under both the Etsy Seller Policy and Etsy Terms of Use.
• Service providers: I engage certain trusted third parties to perform functions and provide services to my shop, such as Paypal and delivery companies (USPS, FedEx, UPS). I will share your personal information with these third parties, but only to the extent necessary to perform these services.
• Business transfers: If I sell or merge my business, I may disclose your information as part of that transaction, only to the extent permitted by law.
• Compliance with laws: I may collect, use, retain, and share your information if I have a good faith belief that it is reasonably necessary to: (a) respond to legal process or to government requests; (b) enforce my agreements, terms and policies; (c) prevent, investigate, and address fraud and other illegal activity, security, or technical issues; or (d) protect the rights, property, and safety of my customers, or others.
Data Retention:
I retain your personal information only for as long as necessary to provide you with my services and as described in my Privacy Policy. However, I may also be required to retain this information to comply with my legal and regulatory obligations, to resolve disputes, and to enforce my agreements. Based on the recommendation of the Internal Revenue Service (United States), I generally keep your data for the following time period: 7 years.
Transfers of Personal Information Outside the EU:
My studio is located in the United States and do not transfer your personal information outside of the E.U. In order to provide you with my services, I may store and process your information through third-party hosting services in the United States and other jurisdictions. As a result, I may transfer your personal information to a jurisdiction with different data protection and government surveillance laws than your jurisdiction. When necessary to transfer information about you outside of the EU, I rely on Google Cloud as it is Privacy Shield certified.
Your Rights:
If you reside in certain territories, including the EU, you have a number of rights in relation to your personal information. While some of these rights apply generally, certain rights apply only in certain limited cases. I describe these rights below:
• Access: You may have the right to access and receive a copy of the personal information I hold about you by contacting me using the contact information below.

• Object: You can object to (i) my processing of some of your information based on my legitimate interests and (ii) receiving marketing messages from me after providing your express consent to receive them. In such cases, I will delete your personal information unless I have compelling and legitimate grounds to continue using that information or if it is needed for legal reasons.
• Complain: If you reside in the EU and wish to raise a concern about my use of your information (and without prejudice to any other rights you may have), you have the right to do so with your local data protection authority.

Care instructions
With proper care, your journal or photo album should last for many years. Here are some tips on how to preserve your book:
• Prolonged light exposure can fade the colors of the covering materials of your book, along with any botanical inclusions in the paper. Store your book in a protected location.
• Storing your book upright on a shelf can result in gravity pulling on the binding. Your binding will last longer if you store it flat.
• Botanical inclusions may come loose from the covering paper - this is to be expected. If desired, you can secure the leaf or petal by using a light coat of glue on the back and pressing it overnight with a heavy book (be careful not to squash the ribbon).
