About

Clay --Our lives, Our story

Welcome to our pottery shop. Our name BlueRoomPottery comes from a dear customer of some time ago in Greece, who had a beautiful gallery on the Greek island Skiathos. He had dedicated one of the rooms to my blue ceramics and he called it the "BlueRoom".

All the work you see in our store is made ONLY by MY two hands in my studio in St. Paul, Minnesota. I either throw my pieces on the potter's wheel or model them by hand and decorate and glaze them all by myself with my own glazes.

BlueRoomPottery is the result of teamwork between myself and my partner David, who also has a connection to the Ceramics' field through his father, who was the President of Wedgwood in the USA until his retirement. David helps me with glazing, handles customer service and packing/shipping, and this allows me more time to keep my hands muddy, to sit on my wheel and create my pieces.

My work is also my hobby, so in my Etsy store you will see from time to time the 3 distinctively different lines of work I make, my traditional family designs, my Museum / gift shop / production line, and my high end / One-of-A-Kind gallery work.
I like to keep my hands busy with a variety of work and experiment with different clays and glazes.
This way I can produce large quantities of pieces without getting bored... and what you see in this store is only a small taste of what I make :)

I have been involved with pottery all my life, but I really started working as a professional potter after I quit my office job in my early twenties. I realized that all I could think of while I was at the office everyday was, what piece I would make when I went back home to my studio.

I come from a family with a long line of potters (at least 8 generations) from the island of Sifnos, Greece, and am the first woman in the family that became a potter. And although I was born into this craft, I had to work really hard and train myself just like any other potter does.

For the last 20 years I've been living and working in Minneapolis, USA. I came as a resident artist on a Fulbright-Hayes Grant and taught at the University of Minnesota. Since then, I have settled here and call this home.

I have been selling my work for many years through many galleries and Museum Shops, first in Greece and then in the US and numerous other galleries all over the world, too many to mention here.
My family discovered ETSY and convinced me to open this store ...since then my life changed in so many ways. I really love it and turned it into my day job (and night job, LOL!)!
I have learned so many new skills and have made a lot of friends all over the world.

My work can also be seen in numerous Museums of Folk and Popular Art in Greece, along the work of my late father's, Nikolaos Theodorou, who was my teacher and sister-soul, one of the few remaining master potters in Greece. (You can Google "Nikolaos Theodorou Pottery", and see what I mean).

I am an exhibiting member of the American Craft Council,
a member of the PanHellenic Potters Association PEKA, Athens, Greece
a former member of the Board of Directors of the Fulbright Association, Minnesota Chapter
and together with David and our sons Martin and Nikos we run Gallery OKTO in St. Paul, MN, USA
http://www.galleryokto.com

I LOVE my work and every piece that I make, even if it is a production piece that I repeat, is always fresh and new to me. I am never tired of sitting on my wheel to make beautiful pieces that a customer will enjoy and use for many years. It is like a calm meditation that fills me with energy.

A huge "THANK YOU" to ETSY Admin for featuring my work in the June 4th, 2010 "This Handmade Life" http://www.etsy.com/storque/handmade-life/eye-of-the-artist-the-deep-blue-8665

We hope you can find something you like from the pieces we have listed here, and that it will add joy to your daily lives.
