Announcement   Hi, I’m Michaela, of Blue Stiggy, I’m a textile artist, working mainly in hand embroidery and book binding.

--- N e e d l e --- T h r e a d --- P a t i e n c e ---

Are pretty much my only tools, or at least these are the tools I could not live without. I love the quiet contemplative nature of hand stitching. Whether it’s embroidering a necklace or sketch in sublime vintage silk threads, or binding a journal with waxed linen.

Using materials mindfully, many of my threads are sourced from vintage suppliers and my papers are all recycled. I’m completely in love with the handmade cotton rag paper used in all of my notebooks. I love it because it uses waste from the textile industry and I especially love how it feels. It’s a beautifully textured strong paper.

My studio companion is Dorothy, my 1950’s Baby Hermes typewriter. She works very hard, tying personalised messages and quotes on to my hand bound notebooks and journals.

Some of my items are made to order, so if you see something you like, but need a different colourway, just get in touch. I'm happy to take custom orders too. Grab a brew and have a browse. tatty bye for now. x

Michaela created 14 beautiful notebooks for my trainees, personalised with colours and quotes. She was superb at communication and the notebooks are incredible. My students were delighted with them. I'll definitely be using her shop again! Thank you so much!

I can’t bear to throw away these strips which are a byproduct of my bookbinding. So I save them all up, and then weave them in to these beautiful baskets. They look absolutely perfect with succulents in them.
Big cheers for the awesome lecturers who’ve ordered these for their students as graduation presents. Btw if you haven’t bought your final year students one- well, let’s just say that some of your colleagues are - ahem, making you look bad. winkjust sayin’.
Hope you’re all having a wonderful Easter break. Thankyou for all your orders over the weekend. They will be made and posted tomorrow. But then I’m having a little family time. Orders taken now will be made and dispatched Monday, 9th April Xxx

About

Live the Life you Imagine!

I have always loved to make and work with my hands, since I was small. My Dad is an Engineer and I loved being in his shed with him as a child, making a little wooden boat, or a swing and then when I was older working on my car with him and now, my Camper.
I made clothes for my dolls, curtains for my Wendy house, dressing up outfits. I did any craft I could get my hands on! Embroidery, cross stitch, lacemaking, painting, drawing, sewing printing – I didn’t care as long as I was making something and especially if I was learning a new skill.

I haven’t changed, I am more focused in my work now (sometimes) but I still love to attend workshops with textile artists. I still have a great appetite for learning new skills. I have been learning traditional upholstery for many years – I love the traditional way of doing things, with hands and materials and tools that haven’t changed for hundreds of years.
My day to day work is focused on stitching, particularly hand embroidery. Taking this very traditional skill that has been practiced for centuries and using it in a way people still want to own. But using those same tools and indeed the same stitches that have been practiced for years. Continuing a long line of stitchers before me.

To complement my embroidered work I am also learning silversmithing skills. I’m keen to merge the art of silver and stitch together and not be constrained by fittings that I can buy, for my jewellery but instead, use fire and metal to create my own, I love to watch the silver when it runs.

My philosophy in life is to ‘live the life you imagine’
So for me, that is;
Making – Stitching – Selling – Teaching.
Living in the countryside in a Victorian brick cottage, with a dog and some chickens, a logburner to keep warm.
Days out and adventures in our Bell tent and Camper – campfire cooking.
I always felt like this, but since my husband’s illness, it has become even more important to me to:-
