Thank you so much for these beautiful rings. They arrived perfectly safe all the way from New York to Singapore. A great token to connect with the fact we got engaged at Central Park. It is delicate, sturdy and unique. Can't wait to exchange this on our wedding day!

Barbara Michelle Jacobs Jewelry

Barbara Michelle Jacobs (BMJNYC) began as a hobby - one jewelry class a week for many years as an escape from an uninspiring job in the graphic arts industry. I sold paper. Yes, just like The Office's Dunder Mifflin but without the laugh track. In 2008, I stumbled upon Etsy and listed a few items just to see what would happen. The response from both customers and press has been OMG phenomenal. I’m tickled by the journey this little shop has kicked off and l love how I spend my days. Thank you, I couldn't have done it without you. Full Steam ahead and no reason to look back!

BMJNYC jewelry is organic elegance. Our customers are real everyday people who are connected to the world around them and appreciate fine quality over quantity.

My From Nature collection starts with direct castings of twigs and branches found in and near Central Park. These natural elements are the structural framework of the collection which is produced from recycled precious metals and natural gemstones. Any cast components are made locally at a boutique casting house using recycled precious metals and diamonds are set by an old world stone expert stone setter. I could do the setting myself but I want to assure you the best product possible and he's amazing. Everything is handcrafted here in NYC and all orders go through a stringent quality control process before shipping.

BMJNYC is named for my inspiration—my children and the city I love. Happily, the business has grown steadily and I am no longer a one woman show. My friend Alice is now helping in the office and Alan, my very patient husband of 20 plus years continues to be a constant source of good humor and IT support.

You can find our jewelry here on Etsy, by appointment with Barbara in NYC, on our website, and perhaps soon, at a location near you. Have a question about a special piece you've been thinking about? Click "contact shop owner" on the sidebar. We would love to hear what you have in mind.

Welcome to Barbara Michelle Jacobs Fine Jewelry (BMJNYC) - specializing in the art of the diamond ring, engagement ring, wedding bands, earrings, custom jewelry and so much more.

I design and make organic lifestyle jewelry for the eco conscious customer. It pleases the eye, feels important in your hand and has integrity. Everything is made by hand from recycled metals and stones prized for their natural beauty. My work reflects my appreciation for how objects evolve from ideas and feelings while striving for a natural effortless look - as if I am gently engineering nature taking the gentle curves of our bodies into consideration. Little romantic details to be discovered again and again - everything is made to last and age gracefully. Just like us.

My business started here on Etsy in 2008 and I am so grateful for all the wonderful customers and friends I meet here. Thank you! I love what I do and take great pride in offering high quality elegantly designed jewelry at a fair price. Please know that great care is given to every item made and to all communication.

All items arrive at your door gift ready in my signature packaging. Gold in hand made walnut boxes adorned with clay florals made by fellow Etsy artists KRTWoodworking & DKdesignshawaii. Silver jewelry in soft woolen felt pouches accented with natural pearls and delicate silken flowers. Opening a BMJNYC package is a tactile and visual enticement to the treasure within.

Additional policies and FAQs

• WHAT IS YOUR ECO/ETHICAL PHILOSOPHY AND HOW DOES IT INFLUENCE THE WAY YOU RUN YOUR BUSINESS? My ultimate goal is to do good and also to leave this world a better place. I know - a little heavy but, responsible sourcing is my priority. By tracking materials and making thoughtful choices we have the power to create change. At the moment many of the distribution channels for stones and metals are nontransparent but this is changing. There is consumer awareness now, like never before and I am committed to doing the best I can.
Here's what I can tell you for sure about my materials...
PRECIOUS METALS - (Gold and Silver) 95% of the metal I use is 100% recycled. It is recycled and refined by Hoover and Strong into Harmony Metals and by United Refiner's into Re-Defined products. Of the remaining 5%, much of it is recycled as well. This small percentage accounts for solder and some findings.
DIAMONDS - Please see each listing for specific information. Diamonds are conflict-free and acquired from reputable wholesale sources who participate in the Kimberley Process Certification System. Stones with GIA Grading Reports, newly mined Canadian diamonds and vintage diamonds, are available at a premium. Canadian diamonds are laser inscribed with a tracking number which traces it back to the mine it came from. Antiques diamonds, in the spirit of recycle-reuse-reduce waste, offer a sensible and charming alternative to mining. They can often be dated by cutting style and wear. If you are ordering a made-to order diamond ring we will discuss this in more detail.
Diamonds .25 carat and smaller are kept in stock. Larger stones are selected and purchased especially for you.
COLORED STONES - Whenever possible, Fair Trade stones are sourced. See item listings for more specific information.
MISC.- The least toxic methods and studio chemicals are used. Please realize that responsible sourcing is an important issue for me and I'm determined to keep raising the bar. If you have an idea or contact that can help me do a better job, I would love to hear it.

• WHY 18 KARAT AS OPPOSED TO 14 OR 10K? Because it is the best and the end result is fantastic. 18K is a testament to the quality, workmanship and longevity of your investment. It's the real deal and used by the most well respected jewelers. 18K means that by weight, an item contains 75% PURE gold and 25% other alloys. By weight, 14K contains 58% pure gold and 42% other alloys. This means that 14K contains less than 50% gold by volume.

All of our diamonds and gemstones are sourced locally from reputable US and Canadian based professionals who have pledged to sell conflict
free, mine to market diamonds. This pledged is written on every invoice from my wholesale suppliers and is in accordance the Kimberly process guidelines.

• ARE TWIG RINGS COMFORTABLE? Yes, absolutely. The magnified photos show very enlarged detail. In actual scale, the lines are very subtle. In some styles, the integrity of the organic design continues all the way inside the band. This special secret detail can't be felt when wearing the jewelry. If your would prefer I remove the fine lines inside, just mention it when placing your order.

• IS IT POSSIBLE TO MAKE A CUSTOM MODIFICATION OF A PARTICULAR STYLE? Probably. Please tell me specifically what you would like.

• I NEED A SPECIAL SIZE, WILL YOU MAKE IT FOR ME? Probably, I need to know which style and the size you would like.

The gold I purchase to make your jewelry is recycled from old jewelry that had been sold to middlemen (cash for gold stores) before going to a refiner to remove impurities such as solder and other alloys. I buy recycled gold directly from the refiners and also through casters who purchase from Hoover & Strong and United Precious Metals Refining. As much as I would love to, I cannot recycle your old treasures into something new. The price I would have to charge for the extra time and effort required would exceed any savings from supplying the gold and it would compromise quality.

• WHAT IS PALLADIUM? Palladium is a naturally white metal in the Platinum family group of metals. It is lighter in weight than Platinum and you'll find it listed on the Periodic Table of elements. It is hypoallergenic and will not tarnish. The lovely steel-white sheen will be durable enough to hold any stone secure for years to come. Palladium is 95% pure when used in jewelry and does not require alloy metals and/or plating for protection, which ensures that it will remain white as long as you own your jewelry. Oh, and it's recycled from Catalytic Converters (car exhaust systems). Some listings show Palladium as a metal option. Other styles may be customized as well.

• WILL YOU MAKE ME A CUSTOM ORDER IN STERLING SILVER? Again, the price I would have to charge to cover my time makes the finished product cost prohibitive in silver. It doesn't make economic sense for you.

• HOW BIG IS A mm (millimeter)? I know it can be difficult to picture. Here's a quick visual that may help: Most of the plastic credit cards in your wallet are 1mm thick.
1/8 inch = 3.2mm
1/4 inch = 6.5mm
1/2 inch = 13mm

• CAN I SUPPLY MY OWN STONE(S)? No, for liability reasons this is not an option for online sales. Only completed pieces with genuine stones set in place are shipped. Ring mountings or any other piece with unset stones are not available for sale.

• DO YOU OFFER A WARRANTY? There is a one year warranty on loss and replacement of small accent stones. You will be responsible for the cost of shipping one way and I pay the shipping back to you. (Please contact me for shipping instructions). If another jeweler works on the piece, the warranty becomes void. This includes stones falling out after another jeweler resizes. There is no warranty on center stones. To protect your investment, center stones and/or complete pieces are commonly covered as a rider on your homeowner's / renter's policy or by insurance firms such as Jeweler's Mutual or Chubb. Please see my blog for more about insuring your jewelry.

• HOW LONG WILL IT TAKE YOU TO MAKE MY ITEM? Production time for custom made-to-order items is up to 4 weeks. Actual lead times are dependent upon factors such as raw material inventory at the time, the day of the week the order comes in and supplier's casting schedules - all of which constantly change. My tasks are grouped for optimum efficiency and I keep to an organized production schedule. If you have a specific request please contact me and I will try my best to accommodate. I need to know 3 things - style, shade of gold and when you intend to place the order. Inside Hint: Orders placed by 9:00 Tues morning (NYC time) tend to move fastest through the system.

• MY PURCHASE WILL BE A SURPRISE GIFT, HOW WILL THE SHIPMENT BE PACKAGED? No worries, your secret is safe. Your purchase will be carefully packed and boxed in a Federal Express branded box (or a padded envelope for purchases under $299. which ship USPS Priority). The sender will not be BMJNYC or Barbara Michelle Jacobs Jewelry. Jewelers often ship under an alternate name to deter theft. It's an unintended coincidence that this also impedes curious others :) If you prefer delivery to your office make sure to specify the correct ship to when you purchase.

If I can accommodate, I am happy to do so. I don't think rush fees are fair - all customers and their orders are equally as important. Sometimes, due to casting schedules it's not possible to guarantee a sooner ship date and I will never promise something I can't deliver. Contact me with specific questions.

• WHAT IS THE BEST WAY TO REACH YOU? Send me a convo here on Etsy. Again, specific questions :) If I happen to be in front of the computer you'll get an immediate response. Other times it may take a day or until after the weekend for a reply. Please be mindful that I am running complex hands-on businesses and I am working with many customers at the same time. Thanks so much for your patience. I'll be back to you asap.

• CAN I SEE YOUR JEWELRY IN PERSON? I am delighted to work with clients who are interested in commissioning custom pieces. Appointments are available during regular business hours.

• HOW DO I PLACE AN ORDER FOR A CUSTOMIZED ITEM? If you are new to Etsy and would like a better understanding of how this site works: Otherwise,
1. contact me by convo with inquiry - style, color, finish, stone details & your size
2. I will reply with price and delivery
3. Your reserved listing will be created for you outlining all the specifics
4. upon payment, I will confirm your order personally and get to work. If you would like to check-in mid-way for an update, that's fine. Then expect to hear from me with tracking information shortly before your order ships.

• WHAT IF I ORDER A RING AND IT DOESN'T FIT? The good news is, it's often easy to fix. Many opt to resize locally to bypass the time and expense of shipping back to NY. The charge to resize is $40.00 plus shipping. Rings with stones set all around the band sometimes cannot be resized. Please take extra care when ordering these styles.

Determining your ring size- Forget measuring with a string and I don't love those plastic strip things either. Metal sizing rings will give you the most accurate size. You can purchase a set for about $10.00 or stop by a local repair shop and ask to be sized at no charge. Keep in mind that fingers are not the exact same size all day every day. Humidity, salt intake, time of day etc effect size. Do your best and in most cases the size can be adjusted if necessary.

Please be respectful and courteous and do not copy my designs or have someone else to copy them. I love what I do but this is also my livelihood - The styles you see have been perfected through hard work and monetary investment. When they are copied it directly affects me and is just plain not right. I (and all other artists) thank you so much for being respectful of this and for your cooperation.

All designs, copy and associated images are ORIGINAL and are the property of Barbara Michelle Jacobs Jewelry BMJNYC All rights reserved. I reserve the right to update policies if necessary.
