Announcement   WE ARE VERY SORRY BUT WE ARE LIMITED IN WHAT WE CAN DO AT THIS TIME BECAUSE OF MEDICAL PROBLEMS. WE WILL TAKE OCCASIONAL ORDERS WHEN YOU CANNOT GET BOBBINS FROM ANOTHER SOURCE, BUT THE LEAD TIME WILL BE MUCH LONGER THAN PREVIOUSLY ADVERTISED.

I am a retired engineer who, at the request of his wife, has started making spinning wheel bobbins. I make exotic wood bobbins to fit modern wheels as well as custom bobbins made for your antique or orphaned wheel. Your bobbins can be made in North American hardwoods, or exotic woods (depending on availability) and are made with polymer bushings for years of smooth spinning. All of the bobbins I make are given a final hand turning after assembly and before finishing to ensure that they are perfectly balanced. You can see examples of some of the custom bobbins I've made under "sales" (over there on the right).

Most of my bobbins are made by special order. You should contact me to work out details of your special bobbins. Current inventories of wood are listed in my FAQs under Shop Policies.

THESE ARE SO AWESOME!!!! I spun some super fat singles on them and then plied them onto my original and it all worked great. Friendly, prompt service that couldn't be beat. My husband is a carpenter and he agrees they are well made.

Amazing woodworking: smooth and natural finish, perfectly proportioned, and spins so easily I don't want to use any of my regular bobbins again. Thanks for the freebie lovely bump of fiber and the cotton leader works really well too. Thank you for a fantastic product.

Need spinning wheel bobbins? This is the place you can get them. I don't resell any original bobbins, all of my bobbins are handmade specifically for you and your wheel. My bobbins all have polymer bushings for smooth, quiet spinning and are made in quality woods with a clear finish.

We will accept international orders, but you should consider the shipping cost of sending us your bobbin/flyer and return shipping.

We accept PayPal, personal checks and money orders.

The price of the bobbins depends on the woods selected and the amount of engineering required (for example, if I have to design a bobbin it will cost more than duplicating an existing bobbin). Currently, the price for a maple unfinished, double-drive bobbin made to fit an antique wheel is $35. As I develop bobbins that will work with modern wheels, I will post prices for them. Payment must be received before I will ship the bobbins. Orders may be canceled at no cost before special materials are purchased or work begins on the bobbins.
Shipping
Finished bobbins will be shipped by Priority Mail.

FAQs

1. What measurements are needed if I want a bobbin made to my specifications?

At this time, I cannot accept orders for bobbins based on the user's measurements. I have special equipment for making measurements. A tiny fraction of an inch difference can result in a bobbin that will not spin properly.

2. What woods are available at this time?
Woods available 7/09:
Whorls:
Oak
Maple
Yellowheart
Purpleheart
Zebrawood
Cherry
Walnut
Persimmon
Quilted Maple
Lacewood
Hickory
Cedar

Shafts:
White Oak
Red Oak
Birch
Cherry
Hickory
Purpleheart
Leopardwood
Zebrawood
Mahogany

3. Can I have a bobbin stained to match my wheel? I do not stain my bobbins. This is because I'm using beautiful wood and because it would be too difficult to exactly match your wheel's color. If you want your bobbins stained, I recommend that you buy your bobbins unfinished then stain and finish them yourself. My bobbins are normally provided with a clear hand rubbed oil finish.

4. How long will it take? For a simple reproduction of an existing bobbin, you should allow 1 to 3 weeks for the manufacture and shipping of the bobbin. I need to make sure all epoxy and finishes have cured before shipping. If I have to design your bobbins or you request an exotic wood that I don't have on hand, I might need extra time.

5. What do you need to make a bobbin to fit my wheel if I don't have any bobbins. You will need to send the flyer and drive whorl (for double drive), a picture of your wheel, and the diameter of your wheel.
