About

Boii Studio was literarily handmade out of clay* in a spell of sudden madness.

* We had to dig out numerous dump trucks of clay from our basement to build our studio. Btw: we don't use that clay for ceramics but we know a few local ceramicists who do... ///This is how rich with clay is soil in our area (annoying to homeowners whose houses move up and down with expanding and shrinking clay underneath their foundations, causing cracks in walls and ceilings)///.

Once upon a time, when the construction dust settled down and we stirred up a new one with our ceramic clay explorations, we slowly but surely kept finding ourselves surrounded by more ceramics than we could possibly gift to our friends and relatives and so we decided to offer some of our creations to the Etsy community.

We don't do ceramics full time but whenever we have time and get kissed by muses, we stick our hands to clay, shape new objects and fire them in our kilns. We started with one electric kiln (we still use for most cone 5-6 oxidation firings), added a raku kiln soon after and look forward to fire our "new" (rebuild) gas kiln we plan to use for cone 10 reduction, salt and soda firings.

For those of you wondering why "Boii" Studio: Boii was the largest Celtic tribe living on the territory of today's Northern Italy, France, Switzerland, Hungary, Austria and Czech Republic - the last one even got its name "Bohemia" after the Boii tribe having their largest oppida in today's Czech Republic (= Bohemia = Boii-haimoz = Boiohemum = home of boii). And since all of us in our studio are of the Bohemian origin, we felt the name would resonate with our genetic memory.

We make wheel thrown pottery and hand-made ceramics using mostly local ceramic clays, various colorants, stains and glazes - some of which are custom developed by our studio. Most our products are fired in oxidation atmosphere in mid fire (cone 6) in electric kiln. Some products are fired in gas kiln - high fire cone 10, reduction or oxidation, or salt /soda atmosphere. We also use raku kiln, fire pit and saggar for special decorative effects.

Each piece is hand-made and therefore one of a kind; for better and worse, it may have (mostly welcome) imperfections not found in factory mass-produced products. We believe you understand this peculiarity but if you want to see more details of any of our products, please ask for additional pictures. We will gladly take photos of all sides, angles and details of the exact piece you inquire about.

We appreciate any communication with buyer or colleagues. Feel free to ask any questions.
