About BoneandBirchNW

Bone & Birch Needleworks focuses on synthetic free, naturally plant dyed wool yarn, and items crafted in the ancient tradition of nalbinding.

Welcome to Bone & Birch Needleworks!

This store specializes in the handcrafted tradition of nalbinding; an ancient fiber art that predates knitting and crochet by thousands of years. Nalbinding differs in that a single large needle is used to knot lengths of wool together.

While most extant historic nalbound pieces have been discovered in Viking digs and the fiber art is most often associated with Nordic culture, nalbinding has been found all over the world (including China, Egypt, and Peru!) and is still practiced among many peoples.

I make all of the hats myself, sourcing 100% pure wool yarns from various local shops and breeds of sheep. Occasionally there will be some alpaca, cashmere, or mohair thrown in there too!

The items I create are most often used for historical reenactment and purchased by reenactors. As a long-time member of the SCA, I discovered nalbinding about a dozen years ago and have been knotting and looping ever since. With well over 1,000 possible stitch variants, there is always more to learn!

If you have any questions about the listings or nalbinding in general, please feel free to ask! I am also open to custom orders if you have a color combination you'd like and don't see available.

Thanks for stopping by!
