Artist Statement
My perception of the physical world and emotional response to it is the basis of my art, interpreted by drawing, painting, carving & printing onto paper. Employing careful observation I explore the delicate interplay existing between structure, form, colour, shadow and light. Landscape and the natural world are the prominent components in my work. Spending time in northern wilderness areas through my life has established a strong personal relationship to the land.
The region where I live harbours an amazing biodiversity found in the wilderness. I’ve chosen to illustrate an interconnectedness that exists between the landscape, living things and the elements. These studies might serve as an archive as forces of change proceed to alter these habitats and ecosystems.
Source material is acquired from my photographs and sketches. This is then translated via a variety of printmaking disciplines. A fair amount of time is spent developing the image and no matter what discipline is employed, each presents a set of challenges that force me to think and learn from, to expand my levels of skill with that medium. I use various printmaking techniques that include serigraphy, relief block, photopolymer and acrylic plate intaglio, and collagraph. I also implement traditional hand printing methods with more current non-toxic materials in the studio. I also employ hand color to a lot of my small works. Painting and drawing were skills I developed before venturing into the print realm and I find the marriage of the two forms adds that something extra and makes each print unique unto itself.

Brian went above and beyond to get this print to me. I had actually found it while scanning Pinterest but it wasn't for sale anymore. I contacted him to see if he still had one on hand and he was able to find one for me within a day. Love the print!

About

Inspired by nature

I began my career as a freelance illustrator. For the past two decades I have created as a multi-discipline medium printmaker. Inspiration is mostly found in nature as well as my surroundings. My works have been exhibited through both solo and group displays in various Canadian gallery spaces. In addition to being a studio based artist I also give workshops in the print disciplines and frequently visit classrooms in schools as an art educator.
