About

I write visual hymnals.

Growing up, I was a wildly imaginative little creature person and could sense from very early on the power of [and my affinity for] things like animals, nature, old fairytales & fables. I would take day long walks in the horse pastures and forests I grew up on &'d dab crickety old sticks I'd find into the the waterwalks where there was never any rush of sound beyond wind in the high birch grove branches. I was fascinated by the light in forests & the metaphors nature so quietly held and showed to anyone willing to sit quiet enough and listen. I remember falling asleep in deer nests & waking up in herds that had gathered around me as I slept ... and I remember by ten years old I'd begun collecting an impressive array of various odd things from my little adventures out in the woods: horse hoof clippings, bird nests, pressed tree leaves from autumn's past, eagle feathers, quills, insect wings, bergamot & clovers. I would find old glass jars & put dried hydrangeas into them with a spritz of perfume to keep for years like a scientific experiment, seeing what would happen to the plant & to its perfect earthen smell.

When I wasn't out in the woods, I was growing up in auction houses & under tables at antique stores, with an antiquities dealer for a mum, which taught me to love history, old materials and lost treasures and things like abandoned houses that lined so many of the prairies that I wandered. The house was filled with old finds she would collect & salvage, like maxfield parrish paintings & andrew wyeth & through our inherited native american lineage, there were pieces of beadwork handed down, heirlooms in the house which hung near plenty of books about earth medicine & fairy lore.
For all of it, I was a sponge & great observer.

When I grew up, these things were all rooted into me. I couldn't unwind them from me now if I tried.

In 2006, I found a camera on a long weekend back at that farm, in my old closet & very soon after that moment, I knew I'd found my calling, which has always been simple: creating imagery.
I knew that I wanted to relay these pieces of myself & my veritable diary, to the world with the wild little girl driving the helm.

And so one day not long after I'd been discovering life through a lens, "Bottle Bell" was born - a metaphor & pseudonym that came to me one day while out walking those fields.
For those interested in the story of the name Bottle Bell, this particular interview covers that a bit better: http://phlearn.com/phlearn-interviews-bottle-bell

And so finally, now, about 7 years into being a photographer, I realize my heart & soul are not in conventional photography but instead lay in what is known as 'storyboarding' with three portfolios currently being worked on. They are stories with characters, which unfold and the grow longer, larger & more emotionally driven as I myself grow older, more into my life, into being an artist & woman.

Boards currently being conceptualized, casted & shot, are:

*Dust Bowl (A cinematic recreation of the Great Depression Era of American History)

*Faerieland (The Dark Woods are Waking...)

&

*Fable Hill (Because things really *do* go bump in the night | [A mystery which unfolds within the confines of an abandoned victorian manor house when noone is looking]

;)

----

***For character & storyboard synopsis' as well as production notes on any of the boards (especially those within Faerieland) please visit my Facebook fan where it's all written in greater detailing & where I keep the background of these concepts and characters by each piece:

Welcome to the storefront of Ashley Lebedev of Bottle Bell.

This store is the home of the STORYBOARD.

Please sit down & take a moment to immerse yourself.
Even if you are just passing through, I hope you can be enchanted by these pieces. Let them take you away to the magical realm(s) of storytelling. It's what they are all made & meant (both as a whole & individually) to do.

----

Since 2006, I have found there's something quite magical about putting collections of work together that take many years to bring to fruition, piece by piece, character by character. To grow with a collection & body of work is a labor of love and my favorite kind of creativity.

New work is continually released for each of these collections.
