An Obsession with Junk

No, we're not hoarders. We were always building things out of other things-- mostly construction waste. It wasn't until people started asking about them and praising our work that it became clear we were onto something.

The Agathos childhood was one of saws, dust, and work vans. Our father had several cabinet shops over the years, building what are now dated formica-clad furniture for customers all over New York. Our summers were spent helping out. The work van became our RV on vacations. And for George, currently the main character of our story, an abundance of unused and scrap materials allowed the imagination to run wild.

Whatever this is-- whatever we do-- is to find value in things unseen by others. Until recently we tossed a lot of the old timber in the trash. Ditto for metal and other recyclables. We are not the first to reclaim these materials but it has profoundly changed the way we think about the world around us. Everything can be mined and turned into something else.

Our current shop process involves two major steps-- collection and manufacturing.

We get our materials from our own demolition sites (Manhattan apartments, an old church, suburban homes) as well as dumpsters, curbs, and free stuff on Craigslist. It then sits in a queue in our shop where it waits for the appropriate time to be processed into usable pieces. Usually this involves cleaning, trimming, some testing, and the zen stress-relieving activity of nail removal.

Shop members

  • George Agathos

    Owner

George grew up in his father's cabinet shop, constantly begging for scrap wood to play with. He's taken many career paths but it always ends back at him creating and working with his hands.

  • Marie Christine Crousillat

Chief Operating Officer, Creative/Communication Executive Director

Marie Christine grew up in the same neighborhood as George. Her father owns a construction company and many of her fondest memories include the smell of fresh wood and sawdust.

  • Alexandra Agathos

    Owner, Assistant

Like George and Marie, Alexandra has quite a history with wood. From the sound of a drill to the bang of a hammer, Alexa and others at Bottom's Tops and Blocks are well acquainted with carpentry and woodworking.

Additional policies and FAQs
See something you like, but not sure it's the right quantity or size? Shoot us a message. We have lots of material we haven't posted on Etsy that we can custom cut and get you a quote for.

Reclaimed wood products are mostly recovered from places that we had no control over them. For some woods we do arsenic testing but otherwise it is impossible to test for the various contaminants that wood might have encountered in its lifetime. As always, please protect your eyes and do not breathe the dust when working with these materials. Unless specifically mentioned in the listing, the wood is not known to be food safe.

Some of our rougher materials may also have jagged edges or splinters. Please use caution when handling them, or send us a request to smooth them out at an additional cost.
