Video summary: A little process video on how I make my lucky red envelopes adorned with gold foil!

Cute, modern stationery with an Asian twist

Hello and welcome to Bowl Cut Paper Goods! I am Sandra, the owner and designer of this little shop.

As a child, I loved to draw whenever I got a chance. I also had a bowl cut lovingly styled by my grandma. Whenever I see photos of my young self, it reminds me of the imagination, creativity, drive and joy I had at that age. Although I do not have a bowl cut anymore, I am still a kid at heart. It comes through in my illustrations, and they make me smile. What makes me even happier is when they make others smile too.

It was in early January 2018 that I suddenly had an idea. Lunar New Year was coming up when lucky red envelopes with monetary gifts are given within families to celebrate and pass on luck and fortune to one another. These red envelopes usually feature the Chinese zodiac animal of that coming year; in this case, it was the Year of the Dog. So, what if I personalized these lucky red envelopes for dog owners so that THEIR dog is on it? And that's how I started this shop, making the envelopes by hand, illustrating different dog breeds and figuring out how to cut and transfer my designs in gold foil!

Then, another wonderful thing happened next Lunar New Year; I wanted to surprise my family that I was expecting! I designed a beautiful card with pop-up details and gold foil for each family member telling them that they were going to become grandparents/aunts/uncles, accompanied by a cute illustration representing the Chinese zodiac animal of the year in which my baby will be born. I placed each card into a lucky red envelope personalized with the recipient's name, and my family were given the envelopes to open when we visited. It was received with so much love, surprise and joy! It inspired me to create this same experience for others who also want to infuse some Asian culture into their pregnancy announcements.

It was through these serendipitous events that I realized it meant a whole lot more to me when I created products that tie me back to my culture. The idea of combining my love for modern stationery and paper products, cute illustrations and Asian themes gave me a real sense of excitement and purpose. There are many of you out there who, like me, want to reconnect and understand our cultural roots better now that we have grown up and have our own kids (and most likely sported a bowl cut hair cut too when you were young!). I'd like to think Bowl Cut Paper Goods gives you a little bit of that: nostalgia, family, culture and a dose of fun.

Enjoy your stay and I hope you like what you see!
