About BPiancaCeramics

Sales 37
On Etsy since 2016

My background is in sculpture and fine art.
I studied in Florence and spent most of my life in Italy. I am now a Birmingham based artist, designer and maker. Artist tutor at the Mac.
Inspired by nature, skies, landscapes, art and life.
I have recently discovered porcelain and I love it because of its pure white, smooth and translucent surface.
My work is focused on creating handmade functional pieces with simple clean lines, elegant silhouettes, sculptural shapes and dreamy decorations.

I start from a clear idea in my mind or a sketch. When inspired I sketch a lot.
Turning my ideas into clay I usually alter them until I am completely satisfied with the result, obtaining prototypes. I then create plaster moulds.
Each handmade piece is then slip-cast in porcelain and cut into the chosen shape.
I love that from the same mould I can have so many absolutely different shapes, objects and results.
Once the piece has been refined, maybe adding a carving decoration, it need to dry and be fired. I meticulously sand the piece before its second firing to erase the imperfections and to enhance the pure clean lines.

I also love stoneware ceramics because of the beautiful effects resulting from gas firing.
I make slab built pieces. I usually roll a slab of clay and draw directly on it. If I am happy with the new design that I have just created, I make a paper template to be able to make more similar pieces. Then I cut the slab out and build my piece, refine it, fire it, glaze it and gas fire it up to 1280 degrees.
Gas firings are always so interesting as any time the pieces will come out different, making them uniques.
