How I fell in love (with sewing)

I used to sew by hand as a child, sitting next to my grandmother while she placed her hands over mine, guiding my stitches. "Make them even," she'd say, like this," showing me again and again how to make a whip stitch, blanket stitch, running stitch. I can still hear her reassuring me, "you'll get it."

I grew up and didn't take up hand sewing again until my youngest child needed a series of surgeries. I found I needed something to do with my hands to keep me calm while I waited, beeper in hand, for the doctor to tell me everything was OK. And it did keep me calm. The movement, the rhythm--sewing by hand, like knitting, is really a soothing experience. I fell in love with it.

As an adult, I never really thought that I would love to sew the way I did as a child, and I never really learned to use a sewing machine properly until I was 30. But after I had children, I was increasingly frustrated by not being able to find what I wanted to buy in stores--especially when it came to toys and learning materials. And by this point I had another loving mentor in my life.

I know that not every woman gets along with her mother-in-law; I got lucky. Shelley is lovely and she also happens to be a sewing teacher! I told her I wanted to learn to sew and she assured me that I could learn. "You're more than capable, Jenn," she said "you can do it, I'll help you." Now we work together to create beautiful things for our family and yours...and I hope you can feel the love that we put into everything we make.
