Yarn is art

I grew up the daughter of an artist, a sculptor, who held firm notions about what was art and what wasn't. Art was realism, naturalism, cowboys and horses that were exquisitely detailed for accuracy. I never even tried to draw or paint or sculpt, because I was afraid of never measuring up. In fact, I never embarked on any endeavor I believed I might not excel at. I learned to knit 8 years ago, at about the same time my daughter was born, and when we moved here, to Corvallis, Oregon, it seemed that all the knitters were also spinners, so I bought a drop spindle, and then a Fricke e-spinner, and I set about to spin perfect yarns-the interesting thing about that was, spinning is not like knitting, it takes practice, but I loved it so much I didn't care that my yarns weren't perfect in the beginning. I began to realize that the whole point of spinning yarn when you can buy it a lot cheaper, is the imperfections and variations, the little bits that are too thick or two thin, it creates a much more organic and personal yarn. No two spinners create identical yarn-and from there, through a friend who moved here a few years ago, I discovered art yarn techniques and all the cool things you can add in to a batt, and then I realized, my yarn was piling up, and I would never get to knit it all, but I couldn't just give it away or I wouldn't have money to buy more fiber, so I started an etsy shop. I think I end up paying myself abot 5$ an hour for spinning-but I've found my art-the thing I love and need to do every day. It's meditative, the colors and textures flowing through my hands. It's metaphorical-the way so many different fiber colors and types can be spun together to create a beautiful thing. I hope you can share the joy I spin with.

I am a full time mother and fiber artist. I love almost all fibers and spin and knit because it keeps me sane, and because I just can't help it.

Welcome to my shop. I love to spin and dye and knit, and I love to share the fun with you. I appreciate your feedback, it always helps to know what you love and/or don't like about your purchases. I believe that these yarns are a valuable gift of warmth and time. I am happy when I am spinning and dyeing, and I believe that shopping on etsy means that you value the time and effort that go into creating a one-of-a-kind yarns. If you aren't familiar with handspun yarn, you should be aware that it tends to vary a little in thickness throughout the skein, that sometimes there are wee nepps (bumps) in the yarn, and sometimes even a tiny bit of vegetable matter. If you want uniformity you will probably be happier with factory spun yarn. I spin on a Fricke e-spinner due to a disability that doesn't allow foot treadling, and I dye in my kitchen, which is why I primarily use food dyes. I believe in the value of local and organic food and fiber, and in support of that belief, will hand-deliver your product if you live within 20 miles of me!
