KufaDesigns is taking a short break

Note from shop owner I've taken some time away from my shop to travel the world. Check back soon-- the shop will be opened up again in late Novemer 2016 for made-to-order shelves, and by December, I should have most items back in stock.

Sincerely, Brianna

Love my new bookshelf!

I've searched far and wide for fantastic bookshelves that mount on the wall. If found ones I liked, they were ridiculously priced and I didn't like them THAT much. These are very fairly priced especially considering the craftsmanship and they're fantastic. Much more to my liking than even the pricey ones done by "artistes" and therefore a fortune. Wish I could afford another one!

Because furniture should inspire, art can be functional, and craftsmen can become artists

Many years ago, I saw an incredible bookshelf, the Bookworm shelf by Kartell. But something was lacking. It had a fascinating spiral form, unlike anything I'd ever seen, but it no style. The tactile nature of the curvy shelf didn't mesh with the plain red surface finish of the plastic. I decided to make one for myself, out of aluminum with all the style I wanted. Eventually it turned into a business!

I hope my work will inspire others the way that piece inspired me.

A little background about me:

I first touched a welder at 16 and loved it immediately. Ironically, I come from a family of ironworkers, but learned to weld in school in an Auto Body Repair class. As a project for the class, I decided to make the artistic bookshelf mentioned above. I sort of jumped in the deep-end in terms of difficulty, but was resourceful enough to learn all the new required skills. I was blown away by how good it turned out and entered it in a local fair. I won best in show and decided to start a small business designing and fabricating them.

I've come a long way since that first shelf. I took nearly every class I could find on metalwork, including welding, machining, jewelry making, materials science, casting, and patina. I worked professionally as a "specialty metals" fabricator making high-end aluminum and stainless steel structural installations. I worked as a prototyper for Open Source Ecology and designed an Ironworker machine that could cut through 1" x 10" steel. I've worked as an estimator for steel building construction and as a steel erector too. I went back to school in 2014 for architectural engineering, and will finish my degree in June of 2016. Once I have my degree, I plan on focusing on the business full time.

I currently fabricate most of the shelves in my family shop in San Diego, CA, and some of them up in San Luis Obispo where I go to school at Cal Poly. I occasionally hire the family business, Enniss Inc. to help if things get really busy.

I'm the main lady of the operation. I design and make virtually all of the shelves. I've been welding for over 8 years and am currently studying architectural engineering, to be finished in June 2016.

  • Enniss Inc- a steel fabricator

    Lakeside, CA, United States

Enniss was founded by my late grandfather, and my family lets me use their shop to manufacture my shelves. So naturally, as my shop grew, it was them I wished to hire. They have a wide capability for all sorts of metalwork.

Kufa Designs sells handmade, artistic metal bookshelves, all made in the US by a lady ironworker. Some shelves are in stock, others are made to order. I can customize as needed for different dimensions or surface finishes.

My goal is to fabricate furniture which will be effective with regards to how much space it takes up and how much it can hold, while also being beautiful.

I design and build this art with the belief that furniture can be and should be as visually appealing as it is functional; that furniture can shock, that it can be completely unconventional, and that it can inspire new ways of thinking and doing. I try to create pieces which will become a topic of conversation in homes, while still being close in price to "conventional" furniture.

Also check out my website, kufadesigns.com to see more of my work. I embrace any custom work or commissions, no matter how big or small.
