My Jouney to Painting with Wool

When I entered the world of commercial photography in 2003 I had my eye on practical jobs. My bread and butter was product photography on white. Although the challenge of setting up the perfect studio lighting for each job was satisfying I missed some of the more artistic images that I created as a student.

In 2008 I discovered stock photography. Creating generic images for graphic designers was exactly the creative outlet that I was looking for. It was fun, and easy to squeeze in between client jobs. I started providing images to one agency, and soon was represented by 10 stock photography agencies who sell my work with a library of over 5000 images.

My favorite thing to do was drive to the grocery store and look for inspiration. The colors and textures of fresh fruits and vegetables enchanted me, and this love is reflected in my body of work.

In 2017 I decided to put my photography to the side and pivot my business in another direction. I spent about a year exploring other artistic mediums, and even other career options. Finally I decided to revisit needle felting. It was a craft I had experimented with in the past in a 3D form, but this time I decided to work in 2D with a painting with wool technique.

I opened my portfolio and again found inspiration in the fruits and vegetables of my stock photography. I created one piece and then I was hooked. Finally my artistic passion returned sparking my creativity in a new way.

Currently I create paintings with wool in my studio, working with my original photography from the past and creating new images for inspiration when it strikes. My artistic goals are to build my body of work and begin to create kits to share this medium with others.
