Framed Insect Art by an Entomologist

Bug Under Glass began over 17 years ago as a way to combine my Master’s degree in Conservation Biology and desire to explain and showcase the amazing insect world to others.

As a biologist, I believe every insect has a story to tell and if we hear and understand these stories, we are more likely to protect them. With this in mind, it is also important that the insects I use come from a sustainable source, as well as my overall business model is environmentally friendly. This is why Bug Under Glass became a San Francisco Green Certified Business, the first and only insect related business to achieve this when I lived in SF.

Expert craftsmanship and excellent custom service are what separate my insect displays from others. I absolutely love what I do and put this energy into every display. My work has been recognized by Pottery Barn/West Elm catalogs, The National Archives, Apartment Therapy, Herman Miller, SF Chronicle and is currently on exhibit at the "Ripley’s Believe it or Not" museum in Hollywood, CA. I was also featured on national television during the season premier of "Immortalized" on AMC - a taxidermy reality show. B.U.G. was awarded the 2014 & 2015 Best of Houzz (#1 Interior Design website) for Customer Satisfaction.

I live north of San Francisco with my school teacher wife, a cocker spaniel and two toddlers, one who happens to be named after a famous entomologist.

Frequently asked questions
Care instructions

Like all fine artwork, avoid direct sunlight and extreme humidity.

Do you do custom pieces?

Yes, please contact me with your idea and I can give you a quote.

WHERE DO I GET MY INSECTS?

My insects come from sustainable conservation farms/ranches around the world. I do not sell rare, endangered or insects recognized as unsustainable (Dragonflies, Bats, rare beetles).

HOW DOES BUTTERFLY FARMING PROTECT THE RAINFOREST?

By linking environmental stewardship and economic development, butterfly farming positively impacts threatened habitats as well as human well-being. Currently used by conservation organizations, such as the Nature Conservancy and WWF, Butterfly farming helps save rainforest habitat by providing villagers an alternative income to agricultural farming and logging, which clears tropical forest. for more info Google "butterfly farming"

HOW LONG WILL THE THEY LAST?

Since these displays are professionally made using UV blocking glass (so colors won't fade) and archival mounting boards - they can potentially last forever if treated with care. Most sellers are hobbyiest and DO NOT use UV glass or use proper materials - -and they will not last.
