These tools are themselves pieces of art. I bought several, each made of a different type of wood. Each is beautiful. My nephew loves them all. (Thank you for sending along an extra surprise tool and inspirational decal, too. I included them with his graduation present, along with your note.)

About

Extraordinary Pottery Tools

I started off wanting a better pottery tool than I could buy from the box of tools that the local supplier had on the shelf. I wanted something without nicks or flat spots in the curve of the rib. After I had made a couple of ribs I started refining their shape and improving my technique. I started making ribs with flawless sweeping lines, I enjoyed this process!

In a lot of ways it was just like making a bowl on the potters wheel. I was after a sweeping line, a special curve, a feeling of movement. The tools began to take on a life of their own, they became sculptural and functional. Many people have told me they don't even use them, they just hang them on the wall as a beautiful display, a testament of the potters tools.

I believe that too often we make do with what will work when with a little forethought we could be surrounding ourselves with beauty. In this way we can stimulate our creativity and raise the bar on our expectations of ourselves.

I began throwing on the pottery wheel 30 years ago. With a desire for a specific curve in a bowl I made my own pottery ribs. They were a hit with the potters around me. Now I make one of a kind, custom tools and brushes for discriminating potters.
