Rough Yet Refined--Decor That's Perfectly Imperfect

A warmest welcome to you. Thank you for your interest in Cabin Girl and for supporting an environmentally-conscious business. *For more information on my business practices, please see the explanation at the bottom of this section. All Cabin Girl pieces are made by me using shared space in my father's workshop. "The Shop" is just a few feet from the front door of my late 1800's log cabin. I help to maintain the shop and, along with my mother, have collected many of the tools found there.

Cabin Girl is born of my desire to work with my hands and rekindle my creative fire. The result has been challenging, therapeutic, meaningful, and a whole lot of fun. There is such beauty and simplicity in reclaiming, repurposing, and ultimately designing a unique piece that catches someone's eye and brings about an admiring smile. It is the imperfect nature of salvaged and second-hand items that makes them so perfect.

I have always harbored a deep love for old wooden barns and farm buildings as well as a passion for all things old, used, second-hand, and free. All of the materials for my pieces are salvaged, discovered, milled, or purchased in Michigan's Upper Peninsula with a few exceptions for those times when I just can't pass up a good find when I am traveling outside my area:). Family, friends, neighbors and complete strangers call me when they are cleaning out their barns, basements, and garages or have an old building to be torn down.

Both of my folks have been instrumental in helping me make my Cabin Girl line of home decor a reality and continue to play ongoing support roles. My father serves as my shop advisor. He helps me develop my processes, troubleshoot challenges, and provides the chainsaw and mill work. He is also the person who taught me how to use the shop tools:). My mother is my procurement partner and helps me come up with ideas for new pieces. I got my knack for finding good deals from her. Together, we seek unique items in unlikely places and salvage materials in the trickiest locations.

I am thrilled for the opportunity to being doing creative, physical, hands-on work that is both challenging and immensely rewarding. Cabin Girl is a labor of love, and I look forward to nurturing it's growth with support and feedback from my customers. I welcome ideas, comments, and custom orders.

Be Well,
--Natasha--

Cabin Girl is an environmentally-minded business even beyond the obvious use of repurposed materials in the decor itself. Business cards and packing slips are printed on 100% post-consumer recycled paper. My hauling and delivery vehicle is a Prius (hybrid). Many of the packing materials used are diverted from the waste stream of other businesses. Even the glue that I use to hold pieces in place is eco logo certified and contains no animal ingredients. I do as much work by hand as possible and employ practices that make efficient use of my time and electricity. I am always looking for ways to be kinder to the earth.

Frequently asked questions
Gift wrapping & Personalized Notes

Gift Wrapping
Due to the non-conforming shape and uniqueness of each item, I am unable to offer gift wrapping.

Personalized Handwritten Notes
I am happy to include a handwritten note in your package. Just email me details like the name of the person receiving the gift, the occasion and any other text that you wish to have included.

Custom and personalized orders

I welcome the opportunity to work with you to create a piece that captures your imagination and fulfills your vision. Get in touch with me via Etsy to discuss what you have in mind.

Sizing details

Every item that I create is one of a kind. This means that no two pieces have exactly the same dimensions. When possible, I try to put dimensions in either the title or description of each piece. If you need to know the exact dimensions of a piece, contact me via Etsy. I am happy to provide specifics.

Authenticity & Handling

You have purchased a one of a kind item made from reclaimed materials that are often old and fragile. Qualities such as, but not limited to, knot holes, hammer impressions, scrape marks, rusty nails, and discolored/faded wood are what make Cabin Girl pieces “perfectly imperfect.” Cabin Girl pieces are the real deal—authentic, not cookie cutter or made to look old. It is this authenticity that gives them their charm. Please handle all Cabin Girl pieces with care.

Safety

Use caution when handling pieces that feature rusty wire as it can be sharp enough to scrape or cut you. The salvaged wood found in many pieces has been “cleaned” with a wire brush and an air hose. It is impossible to remove all environmental contaminants, and there is no guarantee that your piece will not “shed” when touched or moved. If you have severe environmental allergies to dust, mold, etc., please get in touch so that we can find a piece that is most suitable to your needs.

Local Pick Up/Delivery

I offer local pick up and delivery options for people living in near proximity to my shop. Please contact me via Etsy to make arrangements before purchasing your item. This allows me to create a custom order with "free shipping."

Environmental Committment

Cabin Girl is committed to using sustainable and responsibly-sourced materials whenever possible. This means that your piece(s) most likely arrived packed in clean, reused shipping materials. Second-hand/salvaged hardware items are often used to construct parts that won’t be seen when your piece is displayed--things like the hangers on the back of sconces and picture frames. This may mean that screws are mismatched, two kinds of wire are used, etc. Reuse of quality materials helps lessen our environmental footprint and keeps costs lower for both you and Cabin Girl.
