Announcement    Chris Hall ~ Felt hat maker. CakeTin Hats is taking a break to design and create some new hats. Please pop back again to see what's new!
Welcome to CakeTin Hats! I live and work in Prince Edward County, Ontario, Canada. My home studio is where I design and make women's hats from fibre to finished piece using the softest merino wool with a traditional wet felting technique. I often add silk fibres and fabrics to the wool because of the unique texture and sheen they create on the finished surface of the felt. To complete the felting process I use pure olive oil soap, warm water and my hands. Felting is a labour of love and I love working with wool to create nature inspired, sustainable, renewable, responsible, eco-friendly fashion.
I hope you enjoy and thanks for visiting!

CakeTin Hats ~ Connected to the magic of felt!

Welcome to my Etsy Shop! I am a felter and I make everything in the shop using wool, silk, water, olive oil soap and my hands. From fibre to felt! I have always been creative but I haven't always been a felter...

About ten years ago my family and I decided to leave our busy urban existence behind in exchange for a bucolic life in the countryside. We packed our belongings and moved to Picton, Ontario. One of my first finds in this charming little town was the local fibre arts store where I discovered wool and wet felting. Surrounded by the gorgeous colours and textures of all that beautiful fibre, I fell hard.

I learned many wet felting techniques by taking a variety of workshops and using information from books. My skill continued to develop through connections with experienced felters, both local and international, who gather every summer at our little fibre arts shop for workshops. It's quite amazing what goes on in small town Ontario!

Learning to felt combined with my love of hats has kept me busy ever since! Someone once mistook one of my wackier hat creations for a cake tin which is how the name CakeTin Hats came about. Now I teach hat felting workshops at Rosehaven - that lovely fibre arts shop in my little town. If you'd like to see the felting process I use have a look at my shop blog post of June 2, 2014.

I work out of my small home based studio and up till now l have sold exclusively at local artisan markets where I love helping ladies choose their perfect hat style. From eccentric fashion statement to classic utilitarian warmth hats are fun, pure and simple! I have been thinking about an Etsy shop for a while. I really hope you like it!

Felting is a joy for me and the results always make the energy and time involved in each creation worthwhile. Recognizing the magic of felt is not only connecting to the beauty of an organic resilient fabric hand crafted from wool but also to the ancient traditions surrounding it. I always love seeing people make that connection for the first time as they smile out from under their beautiful new felt hat!

    Thanks for visiting!
