I cannot believe I just bought an original artwork by one of my favorite illustrators! (Am I gushing? I'm pretty sure I'm gushing.)

Circles, big and small, as actual painted shapes, and as organizing design principles, are the key to this delightful image's perfection in design. The unfaltering, decisive brush strokes seem to be as effortlessly balanced as the rider atop his bike. Impeccable design alone, compelling art doth not make! As with all of Calef's work, the expressive component is paramount and always eloquently conveyed. The most carefree times of my childhood were had atop a banana bike. Yes, I love the piece!

Little more than an ideogram, this visual haiku is an arresting snap shot of feline mischief. This remarkable sketch directly reveals the essence of art making. The ink is instantly absorbed by the thirsty print paper, making corrections impossible. Calef must incorporate each mark into the final image, or abort, and begin anew. Hand, eye and heart must all be in 'sync' to pull these sketches off with such mastery. I find these, to be among Calef's finest work. As a grateful collector, I consider it a rare privilege to purchase from this shop. As a seller, Calef's meticulous attention to all aspects of each transaction, coupled with his genuine affability, make for some of the most pleasureable buying experiences I have enjoyed on Etsy. The highest of recommendations !!!

Polkabats & Mysterious Fish

I grew up in rural Vermont, upper west side Manhattan, row house Philadelphia, and suburban Boston.
I studied illustration at Pratt Institute and Art Center College of Design, but am a self- taught writer and poet.

Some of the first stories I wrote and illustrated concerned such subjects as a giant pile of stinky dead fish, people driving tables and bathtubs, tiny Vikings who live in cereal boxes and this one time when I got my tongue stuck to a freezer box.

Four of my books were written during trips to India, the southern part of the country being my favorite place in the world.

I try to write and create art everyday, in my sketchbook, with ink & brush, or acrylic and gouache. I live on a beautiful island in Maine with my family, two cats, and a dog named Sneech. What I love about Esty is having a way to stay connected no matter where I live, while allowing people into my studio to have a look around.

These days I’m working on new books that will be coming out in 2012 and 2013, as well as lots other projects.

Look for
Pirateria: The Wonderful Plunderful Pirate Emporium, due out out this July,
We Go Together! – A Curious Selection of Affectionate Verse, coming in January,
& Dragon, Robot, Gatorbunny: Pick one. Draw it. Make it Funny! – a drawing, doodle, sticker book, out now!
