About Carol Es:

Carol Es is a self-taught Los Angeles artist born in 1968. Her artistic nature was formed early, drawing cartoons beneath tables in bowling alleys as a child. Reclusive and shy, she spent most of her time alone while her family relocated more than 15 times before her tenth birthday. As a result, she attended school infrequently, instead working as a pattern cutter in the apparel industry with her father. In her teens, she began to establish herself as a musician, artist and writer. She formed a small clientele of collectors by distributing hand-made zines, while building her reputation as a musician through touring, writing and recording rock, punk, Hip Hop and R&B, but after more than 15 years as a drummer, she set aside playing professionally in order to concentrate more privately on her art. She has since become a prolific and dedicated visual artist.

Now residing in Northeast Los Angeles, she has come to express herself wholly in her art after surviving a tumultuous childhood and disabilities. She has used past experience as the fuel for subject matter, transforming a broken history into a positive and hopeful present and future. Candid experiences are laid bare and forged directly into the work through an amalgamation of oil paint, paper garment patterns, sewing pins, pencil, thread, text and prose, making each piece powerful and tangible as personal therapy. Viewers can sense a distinct honesty in the narrative of her paintings, drawings, soft sculptures, installations, videos, and handmade books.

Carol's works are featured in numerous private and public collections, including the Getty Museum, Brooklyn Museum, UCLA Special Collections, the Jaffe Collection, and Centre Georges Pompidou in Paris. She has exhibited at the Riverside Art Museum, Torrance Art Museum, Santa Monica Museum of Art, the Craft & Folk Art Museum, and Zimmer Children's Museum. She is also a two-time recipient of the ARC Grant from the Durfee Foundation, was awarded a Pollock-Krasner Fellowship in 2010, as well as the 2014 Wynn Newhouse Award in 2015.
