About

Delighting in the Wonders of This World

I grew up in Pennsylvania and spent many days imagining and playing with my friends and siblings in the lovely forest and streams around our house. I developed a deep appreciation for the intricacies and beauty of trees and water
and how light deepens their colors and illuminates them. I was drawn to express my enjoyment of that beauty in my art. Through viewing my paintings, I want others to delight in the wonders of this world too!

I graduated from Grace College in Winona Lake, Indiana with a B.S. in Painting and Drawing and went on to be a free-lance artist and wilderness/adventure guide in the Rocky Mountains in Colorado, the Tetons in Wyoming, Canada, the Catskills in New York, and in the Appalachian Mountains.

I now live with my husband, Eric (who is a biology/ecology professor at SPU and a wildlife biologist), our son, Torin, and our daughter, Bria, in the Queen Anne area of Seattle, WA. where I teach private art lessons and paint. I love exploring and painting in the rugged and beautiful mountains, islands, and forests of the Pacific Northwest!

Painting, drawing, and teaching are my main occupations, but I also enjoy creating many things, including pottery and baskets. Basket making is in my family history. My grandmother has a beautiful, well-made basket that my great-great grandfather, Solomon Hooks, made in 1865. I learned traditional basket weaving from my mother and spent many delightful hours sitting at the table with her, talking and laughing as we designed and wove our baskets. I started selling them at a young age with my mom at craft fairs and fall festivals. As of now, my mom has made over 1200 baskets! Now I love using my baskets to gather herbs from my garden, hold farmer's market produce and tins full of loose leaf tea, and I also fill them with pine cones and other forest and ocean treasures! (Of course I only use the baskets I make for myself--I never use the baskets I have for sale!)

I decided to have an etsy shop because I wanted another outlet to sell my smaller paintings as well as giclee prints of my paintings and baskets that I make. I usually don't sell my larger paintings on etsy because I prefer to meet the people who buy them. Besides being displayed in private collections around the United States, my art has been exhibited and featured in various galleries and exhibits including:

Mount Memorial Art Gallery (Winona Lake, IN)
Huntingdon County Arts Festival (Huntingdon, PA)
Warsaw Community Public Library (Warsaw, IN)
The S. Gerald Weaver Gallery (Martinsburg, PA)
Tea Merchant (Hollidaysburg, PA)
Q Cafe (Seattle, WA)
Mosaic Coffeehouse (Seattle, WA)
Forza (Seattle WA)
Macrina Bakery/Cafe (Seattle, WA)

My "Artist Statement":
I seek to capture with my artwork glimpses of the fascinating cultures and diverse landscapes that I have encountered in many areas of the world. The beauty of nature, whether far away or close at home, beckons us to stop, reflect and become more aware. Whether it's the luminosity and serenity of a sunset, the light breaking in through the trees on a mountain, or the expression of a poor Guatemalan lady, I paint to envoke a desire to live fully in the present, making time for contemplation, understanding, and conversation. My hope is that viewers of my art will be transported and begin to see the world with a greater appreciation and respect. In expanding their worldview, perhaps they will notice the global extent of hurting people and ecosystems and then begin to invest in more than themselves.

GICLEE PRINTS:

If you would like a giclee print of one of my original paintings contact me with your size request and if I haven't listed the cost of that size, I'll let you know what the cost will be. Once you know the cost, let me know if you still want to buy it. Then I will get the print made and let you know when I post the giclee print in my shop. Unless I have the print already available in my shop, it will take about one week to have the giclee print made. Rushed printings and deliveries may be possible so please inquire.

Please remember to specify what print size you would like and if you would prefer the print to be on watercolor paper, cotton canvas (matte or glossy), or photo paper. Print prices vary depending on what kind of paper is ordered, so feel free to ask for the price of all three kinds of paper. The print will have a 1-inch to 2.5 inch white border around it unless you request otherwise (you can always cut and adjust the border as needed). If you order a canvas print then you have the option of stretching it instead of framing it as it is because there will be a 2.5 inch white border (you can request not to have the border).

What is a giclee print? In giclee printing, no screen or other mechanical devices are used and therefore there is no visible dot screen pattern. Giclee (pronounced zhee'klay) is a French term meaning to spray or squirt, which is how an inkjet printer works. However, it is not the same as a standard desktop inkjet printer, and is of a much higher caliber. The image is printed with archival quality inks onto museum quality acid-free fine art paper. Giclee prints are superior to traditional lithography in several ways. The colors are brighter, last longer, are so high-resolution that they are virtually continuous tone, rather than tiny dots. The range, or "gamut" of color for giclee prints is far beyond lithography, and details are crisper. They are desired by collectors for their fidelity and quality.

CARDS:

If you would like to order cards with any of my paintings printed on the front, then let me know what image, size, and how many (minimum order is three cards) you would like and I'll post them in my shop for you to purchase.

All cards are blank inside and each has my signature and website on the bottom of the back. I offer two sizes of card. The smaller size is approximately 5 1/2 x 4 1/4" with a white border around the image. This size of card is $3.00 each, so let me know if you would like to order less or more (minimum order is three cards for $9.00).

The larger size of card is app. 5 1/2 x 7 with a white border around the image. They are $20 for five cards. This larger size is $4.00 for each card (envelope is included with each card), but the minimum order is three cards costing $12.00.

Remember that sales tax for Washington and Seattle residents will be added when you check out.

The coloring differs on each computer screen, so be aware that the coloring might not exactly match what you see on your computer!

FRAMING:

Frames are not included with most of my original paintings (unless specified) and are not included with any of my prints. Some of my original paintings are not standard sizes and will require custom frames, so take note of the sizes. Before you have your painting or print framed, make sure that you measure the painting exactly instead of just going by the measurements that I have listed (there may be slight variations).

If you purchase a watercolor you might want to have it framed with glass (and maybe even glass with a UV coating) to protect the painting. Take care of your purchase by choosing an acid free or archival matte material and hang it away from moisture and direct sunlight if possible.
