Working As The Curator of My Own Exhibition
Selling vintage and antique decorative arts on Etsy is how I have chosen to use my years of curatorial training. Now, when I am on the search, I am thinking through the process of listing it: how a piece evokes a certain period in decorative arts history, how I can creatively arrange it for a photo shoot, and what distinctive features it possesses that I will highlight in it's description.
I always thought I would end up a museum curator, but despite earning a PhD. in Folklore/Folklife with a focus on Material Culture, it never happened. I think I am just too much of an independent spirit to follow the protocol required by a museum. Instead, every time I list an object in my shop, I approach it like I am writing up a label for my own gallery exhibition. What could be better: I have my own ongoing exhibition by running an Etsy shop!
Plus, unlike the objects in a museum, my exhibition entries get to keep moving through the world! I get so much satisfaction from finding just the perfect destination for the objects that I have discovered. I love sending my finds all over the USA and all around world, and knowing that it is embarking on a whole new chapter somewhere wonderful! What could be better: I practically feel like a world traveler through the sales that I make in my shop!
How lucky I am that, thanks to Etsy, I can do all this out of the comfort of my home! I live in a rambling stone house built in the 1920s and the old sleeping porch is my photo studio.

I pack everything very carefully. Everything I send is protected with bubble. In particular, I am sure to use styrofoam peanuts and/or or styrofoam boards to protect ceramics. I am starting to "double box" more and more.
