About

I create Mezzotint Prints and mixed Media Constructions:Boxes, Contemporary Retablos,Shrines, Relics, Accordion Style Books and Wall Hangings etc...

Welcome to My ETSY Shop!

I am a full-time Printmaker and Mixed Media artist. I create original hand-pulled Mezzotints and Mixed Media Constructions. My Mezzotint prints are limited editions on paper. My Mixed Media Constructions consist of boxes, contemporary retablos, shrines, relics, accordion style books and wall hangings.

A printmaker at heart my mixed media constructions come out of a desire to break away from working in 2D and to recycle materials from my mezzotints. Working from 2D to 3D challenges me to grow and develop new skills and to rethink how I formally work.

I have been working in the technique of mezzotint for over twenty years. A process I learned as a graduate student at SUNY at Albany. Learning as I go along, the Construction Pieces are a recent endeavor in the past five years. I have a print studio at the Harwood Art Center in Albuquerque, New Mexico. There I work on my images and constructions. I also teach workshops in printmaking and rent out my etching press to fellow printmakers.

Mezzotint is a labor-intense process which yields very rich and seductive imagery. It is an intaglio printmaking process in which a copper plate is roughened or pitted with a tool called a rocker. These pits hold ink. Once the entire surface of the plate is pitted I begin to draw and pull out the light of the image using tools: A burnisher and a Scraper. Working from dark to light the tools cut and polish down the pits the rocker created, to achieve a large range of values. Once the image on the copper plate is drawn I print. The ink is transfered from the plate onto the paper running it through an etching press. It is important to explain the process of mezzotint, because it is not a commonly used technique.

Mezzotint has a unique quality that lends to my imagery. Nature is my source of inspiration, I reinterpret the natural world into my own visual language to create "Organic Abstractions". Working intuitively, the images evolve with one mark, without any preconceived idea of how it will look in the end.

As an artist process and materials are very important in creating my images and constructions. I like the feel of the materials and working with tools. Preparing and drawing on copper plates is very seductive and meditative. The feel of paper and the smell of inks is very sensual. I use oil-based etching inks and 100% Cotton Rag papers. The inks soak into the paper to create a velvety and lush feel.

After I complete my editions ( I print small editions to keep them more precious) I use the extra prints, proofs and copper plates to construct mixed media pieces. I first started working on these pieces for a specific shrine themed invitational show. I decided I needed to do something different and to go beyond just framing up a print. It was a challenge that was well received and began my journey into the 3D world.

Working 3 Dimensionally, I have to think of all sides and angles. Structurally each piece needs to be well thought out in order to be successful. My constructions start off with a wood base, (I cut the wood myself) and assembled into various boxes, shrines, accordion style books, and wall hangings etc... The prints are mounted onto the wood, and a protective medium applied for preservation. Because they are a work of art in themselves, the copper plates are incorporated as doors and decorative elements. I use other materials to finish up the pieces.

Enjoy!
