About

Meaningful existence in a crowded world...

I started making the body of work using the figures I call "souls" about 9 years ago. I had just moved to Asheville, NC shortly after finishing college to do an artist residency. I thought the way you made a living as a ceramic artist was to make pottery, so I sat at the wheel and made pots. I loved the soothing spinning of the wheel and the idea of eating off of things I had made…but something was missing. In college, I had made a body of work that used some minimalized figures to talk about how people conceal and reveal things. In between making pots I would dabble with these figures as kind of a personal art therapy to work through some things. And much to my surprise, people responded and connect with these sculptures I was making! I was so delighted that, not only did people want to purchase them, but they also shared with me the meanings that they held. Did I mention I was a psychology major in college? Knowing people and knowing them deeply, not just at surface level, has always been most important to me. So it seemed very natural to start pursuing this figure that added beauty and meaning to peoples lives! Here I am, still creating within this idea of the soul and I love every minute of making them and all the stories and ideas they evoke in people's minds.

As you can tell, I am interested in the way that human beings relate to one another. Through my work, I explore human relationships and interactions by stripping the figure of details that would lead to a specific identity. Humans constantly seek to uniquely identify themselves in everyway they can. In our search for individuality, there is still a desire to belong and connect; a fight for meaningful existence in a crowded world. My work takes the viewer back from the distractions of individuality and reconnects them to others, creating sensitivity for how they relate to others. I think on of the most basic human needs I relationship with fellow humans.

Why do I call my figures ‘souls’?
I use the word ‘souls’ to describe the figures that I make because I feel it touches on the essence of who everyone is. It does not indicate who we are on our physical surface or who we are in our circumstances, but who we really are and how we really connect. We all experience joy, pain, suffering, sorrow, love, etc. Sculpting in this style connects people on the deepest aspects of life. I want my work to have a therapeutic and relatable feel to it that draws the viewer in to empathize with it.
