Habiendo sido entrenado como músico profesional y teniendo un trabajo superior en una Biblioteca de Harvard, tomar la decisión de quedarme en casa con mi primer hijo fue uno que esperaba con curiosidad y un poco de aprensión. La ajetreada vida de viajar en una gran ciudad, trabajar en una de las universidades "más inteligentes" del país e interpretar música por la noche fue reemplazada por crema lansinoh, mimos, trapos de eructos y cochecitos. Si bien no fue menos satisfactorio, ir a trabajar un día, tener un bebé esa noche y "quedarse en casa" al día siguiente (para siempre) fue una transición que duró 12 años.

Cuando mi primer hijo cumplió 2 años, tuve que admitir que sentía que mi estilo de vida de bebé de alto mantenimiento estaba empezando a aflojar un poco. Finalmente subí por primera bocanada de aire en 2 años y decidí que necesitaba un pasatiempo. Después de haber visitado el Target Portrait Studio varios meses antes, se me ocurrió que realmente disfrutaba tener fotos regulares, del tipo retrato, para guardar para el libro de recuerdos de mi hija, pero realmente no podía soportar el precio ni siquiera por el paquete base. Compré una cámara, mi primera digital, colgué una sábana blanca, vestí a mi hija con su vestido de Navidad y logré tomar varios cientos de imágenes en cuestión de minutos. Estaba enganchado. Me uní al vasto mar de madres "que se quedan en casa" haciendo lo mismo. Tomar fotos digitales adorables de nuestros hijos, y todo por una fracción del costo de las fotos de Target.

Entonces, al igual que todas esas mismas madres, "me convertí en fotógrafa". Descubrí que me pedían que tomara fotos de amigos, sus hijos y sus familias. Es divertido mirar hacia atrás. Pensé que estaba haciendo algo original. Luego descubrí que el movimiento de la fotografía digital se estaba apoderando como un reguero de pólvora, por todas partes. En un momento dado, mi pequeña ciudad rural de Iowa de aproximadamente 5000 habitantes probablemente lucía cerca de 20 fotógrafos aficionados. Sin embargo, no me vio obstaculizado por la competencia y me mantuve en ello, tratando de hacer crecer mi pequeño negocio. Hasta que hice mi primer libro de fotos. Esperaba con ansias las sesiones de fotos, pero lo que realmente disfruté fue la presentación de los retratos que tomé. Imprimir mis hermosos retratos en los mejores productos y de una manera que contara una historia era lo que esperaba con ansias con cada cliente que pasaba.

Después de varios años, el libro de fotos ganó y cambié los modos de fotografía al diseño de plantillas de fotografía. Descubrí Etsy de esa manera. Establecí una tienda con mis plantillas de fotografía y, en algún momento del camino, necesitaba diseñar un logotipo para un cliente para usarlo con un conjunto de plantillas. Agregué el diseño de logotipos a mi variedad de plantillas y he descubierto en los últimos cinco años que esto me pone nuevamente en contacto con los clientes. Es un placer crear algo de la nada con el objetivo de contar una historia. En el proceso, he ayudado a los clientes a comprender mejor su propio negocio. Si bien disfruto mucho el proceso creativo, ayudar a los demás es la mejor parte de este asunto.

Having been trained as a professional musician and holding a top job at a Harvard Library, making the choice to stay home with my first child was one I looked forward to with curiosity and a bit of apprehension. The busy life of commuting in a big city, working in one of the "smartest" universities in the country and performing music by night was replaced with lansinoh cream, Pampers, burp rags and strollers. While it was no less fulfilling, going to work one day, having a baby that night and "staying home" the next day (for good) was a transition that lasted 12 years.

When my first child turned 2, I had to admit that I felt like my high maintenance baby lifestyle was beginning to slacken a little. I finally went up for the first breath of air in 2 years and decided I needed a hobby. Having visited the Target Portrait Studio several months prior, it occurred to me I really enjoyed having regular photos, the portrait kind, to save for my daughter's keepsake book but I really couldn't stand the price for even the base package. I bought a camera, my first digital one, hung a white sheet, dressed up my daughter in her Christmas dress and managed to take several hundred images in a matter of a few minutes. I was hooked. I joined the vast sea of "Stay-at-Home" mothers doing just the same thing. Taking adorable digital photos of our children, and all for a fraction of the cost for Target photos.

Then, just like all those same mothers, "I Became a Photographer." I found that I was being asked to take pictures of friends, their kids and their families. Its funny looking back. I thought I was doing something original. Then I discovered that the digital photography movement was taking over like wildfire, all over the place. At one point in time, my small rural Iowa town of about 5000 probably sported close to 20 such hobby photographers. I was unimpeded by the competition, however and kept at it, trying to grow my little business. Until I made my first photo book. I looked forward to photo sessions but what I really enjoyed was the presentation of the portraits I took. Printing my beautiful portraits on the best products and in a way that told a story was what I looked forward to with each passing client.

After several years, the photo book won out and I switched modes from photographing to photography template design. I discovered Etsy that way. I set up shop with my photography templates and, somewhere along the way, needed to design a logo for a client for use with a template set. I added logo design to my array of templates and have found over the past five years that this puts me back in touch with clients again. Its a pleasure creating something from nothing with the aim of telling a story. In the process, I have helped clients understand their own business better. While I thoroughly enjoy the creative process, helping others is the best part of this affair.
