About

Cate's Sew Modern: Cloth and Community for Adventurous Sewists

Cate's Sew Modern threw open its door to the public on October 22, 2016. We spent our first 15 months in a small alley-like space in Madison. Then -- in a collective scream of claustrophobia, we finally found an incredible space one town closer to New Haven that we now call home. We moved in between Christmas and New Year's Day, 2018.

50 York Street in Guilford is an amazing place inside and out. Outside, we're on a small island where two rivers merge to flow out to the marshes of Long Island Sound. There, we are surrounded by wildlife: black crested night herons, buffle-headed duck pairs, otters, muskrats, cormorants, ancient snapper turtles, giant crabs, and more.

Inside, the downstairs is home to about 3500 bolts of all kinds of fabric: quilting cotton, lawn, rayon, linen, canvas, poplin, denim, double gauze, sateen and more. The upstairs is our classroom, and is big enough to host retreats and guilds, with vaulted-ceilings, incredible light and endless space to spread out, including three ironing stations, six cutting stations, and enough room for 12 sewists or more.

Thank you for taking the time to read about us, and for helping make this little dream a reality. Customers often say we're now the best curated collection of modern fabric for garments, bags and quilting between Boston and New York City.

If you find yourself near Route 95, we are right between exits 58 and 57. Please come visit us, and form your own conclusions! And check the class schedule on our website first at http://catessewmodern.com/classes. We may well have an activity going on that you will love!

Cheers,

The gang here at CSM.

Shop members

  • Cate B.

    Owner, Curator

Cate moved to Shoreline CT in 2013, jonesing to find her quilting peeps. Unable to quickly find a community, she did what any sane person would do: opened a one-of-a-kind modern fabric shop, with classes and an e-commerce site, all in year one.

  • Marissa R.

    Shop Manager, Customer Service, Marketer

Marissa is a budding mathematician whose love of programming in R and analysis might surprise those who know of her concurrent glitter and sparkle devotion -- and both garment sewing and foundation paper piecing. She and Riley built our Etsy store!

  • Alexi D.

    Photographer, Marketer, Customer Service

Alexi is the operational heart of Etsy today. She is quality control and steadiness personified. And Alexi gets everything to the post office just before it closes, enabling the number of exclamations customers make over lightning-fast shipping!

  • Riley B.

    Co-Founder, Analyst

Riley, Cate's daughter, helped out every weekend the year she took off from Smith, while she worked full-time as a mathematician. She launched our Etsy shop that year. After graduation, now living in Salt Lake City, she still assists remotely.

Frequently asked questions
If shipping costs less than Etsy estimates it to be, will I be refunded the difference?

Yes! Our policy is to refund any shipping overages over $1.

Approximate US shipping costs for 44" wide quilting cotton are below:

USPS First-Class Service on all orders up to 2.5 yards: $3.09 to $5.53

Please note that First-Class Mail is shipped without any insurance. We automatically ship all orders of 2.5 yards and below with First-Class Mail, so please choose Priority Mail at checkout and note this in your order notes if you'd like us to upgrade your shipping to Priority Mail.

2-Day Priority Flat Rate Shipping:

- 2.75 to 8 Yards: $7.55
- 8.5 to 19 Yards: $7.65 to 12.80
- 20 to 30 Yards: $17.60

When will my order be shipped?

We pack and ship order daily Tuesdays through Saturdays. If your order is received by noon Eastern Time on these days, it will be processed the same day. We strive to get later orders out the same day as well, but cannot guarantee it. If you order after Saturday's mail goes out, your package will be placed in Monday's mail, but we will not process orders made on Sunday or Monday until Tuesday.

During the holidays and sales, please allow for 1-2 days extra for processing & shipping times.

Fabric Availability

Because we operate a large brick and mortar shop, there's always a chance, despite daily reconciliation, that some of our listed fabrics are sold in the store, affecting inventory levels. During sales, these chances increase. We typically list less on Etsy than we actually have in stock to reduce the likelihood of encountering this issue.

If we discover we don't have enough to cover something in your
order, we will contact you quickly, so be sure to watch for convos -- as with a purchase from any Etsy shop -- in case we have questions or need to adjust amounts.

If you need more fabric than we have listed, just ask! We'll give you the exact current amount and can set up a custom order for you.

What happens if my order gets lost in the mail or arrives damaged from shipping?

We cannot be responsible for any lost or damaged packages. Although we pack all orders as carefully as possible, what happens to them once they've left our hands is beyond our control.

Orders valued below $200 will not be insured unless you, the buyer, specify that you'd like shipping insurance and pay for the additional insurance cost. If shipping insurance is requested, we will send you a PayPal invoice for the additional cost and only ship your order once this invoice has been paid, unless Etsy's excess shipping charges can be used to cover the insurance cost. In this case we can simply deduct that amount from any shipping overage refund we would send your way.

NOTE: All orders of $200+ MUST be insured at buyer's expense.

Will I receive my fabric in one continuous piece?

Yes! When you order from us, we will always cut your fabric in one continuous piece, right off the bolt, unless we do not have enough on one bolt to do so. If that's the case, we will contact you. The only exception is with pre-cuts -- e.g. fat quarters, bundles, etc.
