Announcement    COVID-19 UPDATE:

THANK YOU for supporting a SMALL BUSINESS instead of a large or even giant vendor.

We specialize in modern quilting, garment, and bag-making fabric and carry a variety of garment and quilt patterns as well as notions. Don't stop scrolling: there's a lot to see! And just use "search" to customize your category -- whether it's a color, a designer, or a type of print.

If you need help matching or otherwise, please feel free to send us a message or give us a call at 203-421-6853, between 10-5 Mon-Sat, Eastern Standard Time.) We are happy to do FaceTime video conferencing, to match a scrap you send us and take photos, or otherwise help you when you must match something perfectly, which is not possible using electron-based tools to match atom-based fabric.

Just because we don't have a listing doesn't mean we don't offer something. We carry many fabrics, patterns and notions not listed, e.g. Merchant and Mills oilcloth, dry oilcloth, webbing and denims. And yes, 1/8" elastic is in stock, as is the soft cording used in the disposable masks.

For local customers: You may order online and ask for curbside pickup, call the store and order items and pay either over the phone or upon arrival at the store, or set up an appointment to browse our inventory any day of the week except Sunday. We only ask that, instead of gloves, you wash your hands upon entry, wear a mask and respect distances of 6'. That way you can feel the fabrics and not have to worry or worry others doing the same.

AN IMPORTANT NOTE ON SHIPPING: In the midst of this pandemic, we have, unfortunately, had to institute a new policy: If you miss the very prominent message that we sell in half-yard increments and then contact us to question why you only got 1/2 of your order -- and if you got free shipping with the first order -- we will not be able to ship a second order to you for the remaining amount without you paying for shipping the second time around. We will submit you a bill for this, and it MUST BE PAID BEFORE THE FABRIC IS HELD FOR YOU, cut or shipped, meaning you will need to pay it quickly or you may lose out on remaining inventory, since manufacturers are shipping slowly if at all. It's unfortunate that we've had to do this, but the free shipping model assumes that you place your full order the first time. The whole premise behind free shipping is that there will be enough large orders to offset a losing formula of people filling their carts just to $50 then repeating that size order due to their error. Again, we will not hold fabric under these circumstances until the shipping is paid for the second round, even though it will not be charged in your cart.

Thank you again for your support. Now: all you have to do is...Love and care for one another. Stay a safe distance away from others, even when masked. Wear a high-thread-count mask that you can rock with your stylin' self. Get fresh air, stretching, meditation and exercise. And sew like mad!!

Cate's Sew Modern: Cloth and Community for Adventurous Sewists

Cate's Sew Modern threw open its door to the public on October 22, 2016. We spent our first 15 months in a small alley-like space in Madison, CT. Then -- in a collective scream of claustrophobia, we finally found an incredible space one town closer to New Haven that we now call home: Guilford, CT. We moved in between Christmas and New Year's Day, 2018.

Almost exactly to the day, we moved 2 years later, just across the street within Guilford, when something much more to our liking finally opened up. Thanks to about a dozen strong and hard-working customers and friends of our shop helped us make this latest move a much easier one. We're excited! Classroom on the same floor. Great parking. A light at the intersection. So, while we are getting way too good at moving, we hope to stay put for a while now. You can find us at The Shops at Strawberry Hill, 1300 Boston Post Road, Guilford, CT.

Thank you for taking the time to read about us, and for helping making our community a reality. Customers state repeatedly that we are the best-curated collection of modern fabric for garments, bags and quilting between Boston and New York City. But it's not just the visitors to our brick and mortar visitors that we dote upon; we get actively involved with Etsy customers in a number of ways, too. For instance, we FaceTime and/or work with you by phone, videos and photos to make sure you get exactly what you need. It's fun for us to help solve creative challenges, whether remotely or in the store.

If you find yourself near Route 95, we are right between exits 58 and 57. Please come visit us, and form your own conclusions! And check the class schedule on our website first at http://catessewmodern.com/classes. We may well have an activity going on that you will love!

Cheers,

The gang here at CSM.

Cate moved to Shoreline CT in 2013, jonesing to find her quilting peeps. Unable to quickly find a community, she did what any sane person would do: opened a one-of-a-kind modern fabric shop, with classes and an e-commerce site, all in year one.

Frequently asked questions
When will my order be shipped?

Our phone is ringing as much as a takeout pizza joint's, but we've added to the team and we are now able to take local appointments, fill curbside orders taken on phone or via Etsy, and also get items ordered before 2pm EDT out the same day, assuming no complications (e.g., short on fabric ordered.) PLEASE: Monitor your Etsy messages closely once you place an order so any questions we have can be answered quickly and your order will not be unduly delayed. Thank you so much!

Take good care,

Cate, Liz, Mia, Becca, Sarah and Betty.

Fabric Availability

Because we operate a brick and mortar shop as well and are going at breakneck speed, there's always a chance that some of our listed fabrics can sell out before they get deactivated.

Etsy is also suffering from a glitch where sold out items randomly reappear for sale and we must write you and explain that the item is long gone. They have not solved this problem yet, and we apologize in advance if you end up selecting one of those "ghosts."

If we discover we don't have enough to cover something in your order, we will contact you immediately, so be sure to monitor your Etsy convos -- as with a purchase from any Etsy shop -- so your order is not unduly delayed.

Thank you!

What happens if my order gets lost in the mail or arrives damaged from shipping?

We cannot be responsible for any lost or damaged packages. Although we pack all orders as carefully as possible, what happens to them once they've left our hands is beyond our control.

Orders valued below $200 will not be insured unless you, the buyer, specify that you'd like shipping insurance and pay for the additional insurance cost. If shipping insurance is requested, we will send you a PayPal invoice for the additional cost and only ship your order once this invoice has been paid, unless Etsy's excess shipping charges can be used to cover the insurance cost. In this case we can simply deduct that amount from any shipping overage refund we would send your way.

NOTE: All orders of $200+ MUST be insured at buyer's expense.

Will I receive my fabric in one continuous piece?

Yes! When you order from us, we will always cut your fabric in one continuous piece, right off the bolt, unless we do not have enough on one bolt to do so. If that's the case, we will contact you. The only exception is with pre-cuts -- e.g. fat quarters, bundles, etc.

What happens if I don't read the item title or description and mistakenly order your fabric by the yard, instead of by the half yard?

If you qualify for free shipping with the first order, and then contact us saying you only got half your order amount shipped to you, you will be required to pay shipping for the second 1/2 of your order, regardless of order value. We will send you an invoice for the shipping cost and fees and will not place your order in queue to be filled until the shipping cost is paid. So PLEASE: (1) read the shop policies, the "about this shop," etc AND/OR just simply read the item's heading fully and description!!

Custom and personalized orders

We are happy to create custom orders for customer to make it easier to order, or because you want fat quarters ($3.99 for most) or a custom cut. Just write us a convo from one of the listings you'd like and we can take it from there.

What if the Screen Image Does Not Match the Actual Fabric Upon Receipt?

We use images provided by the vendor as long as we agree that the real life item and that image capture the fabric's essence. If the vendor's image does not do a good enough job, we will take our own shots to see if we can improve on them and make a note in the description if we cannot do so.

We cannot be held responsible for how images appear on different browsers and screens, since people view them on different types of devices (phones, tablets, computer screens of all sizes) and screens' resolutions vary, can be set at different brightness levels, color themes etc. Furthermore, computer screens have adjustments to color/RBG that can further skew the image. Colors near the image can also affect how the image is perceived.
