Announcement    ORIGINAL ART BY ARTIST CAYLIN SPEAR

The paintings that I created in this shop online are all originals. They are mostly done using oil paint and sometimes a mixed medium of wax encaustics and found shells. The layers are built up regardless of the medium.

Creativity is the constant for me in a life where the unexpected happened early on when I was missing my femur at birth. Being in the ocean has given me a physical freedom and joy that I share with others through my artwork. Painting satisfies my need to express emotions that are easily found in nature such as grief and serenity. The natural lines and values of the movement of the waves inspire an unending well of references for my artwork. The ocean gives one insight into the power and cycle of nature.

The work I create is a response to my life in the place where I feel the most balance, the ocean. My travels as an artist and surfer have led me to see the most beautiful beaches in the world from Nicaragua, Cyprus in the Mediterranean, Australia, mainland Mexico, and throughout the US. I currently reside and call home, Kauai, the most beautiful place of all in my eyes, though all of these places are my inspiration.

When I am making art there is a state of freedom in my mind that is similar to the feeling I have when I am in the ocean. It forces me to be in the present moment and rely on muscle memory and an open mind. My body knows how to use the tools and my intuition is able to control my next moves in and out of the water. I strive for harmony of the mind, body, and spirit in the chaotic layers and lines in my paintings and the ocean.

The process of creating this work reflects on finding quiet moments of balance in a seemingly chaotic world. The gestural drawings in earth tones and contrasting blues and greens and purples recreate this search for peace. The bubbles, water, sand, and reef move about in many different directions as I pull out the final images. Layers of wax encaustic, oil paints, oil pastels, and shells give the feeling of viewing the constant flow and change of water. Sea creatures come in and out of view as a reminder to have respect for all beings in nature and a positive experience for the viewer.

Thank you for taking the time to view my art. I hope that these paintings inspire many many people all over the world.
Aloha,
Caylin Spear
