Announcement   Welcome! Each one of my stoneware, porcelain, and earthenware vessels and tiles are a unique reflection of the awe I have for the natural world.

I hand carve all of my pottery so no two designs are ever the same! I make the basic shapes of each piece in a variety of ways, using the potter's wheel, hand-building with slab construction, pinch, etc. The insides are glazed and the outsides are lusciously textured. Each pot is a pleasure to hold and a pleasure to behold!

All of my vessels are food, dishwasher, and microwave safe unless otherwise noted.

All of my tiles can be installed permanently, hung temporarily (slit on the back for nail or screw), or displayed in a stand. To be used as a coaster, attach felt pads to the bottom.

If you arrange to pick up any of your purchases in person, I will refund shipping.

I sell at King Richard's Faire in Carver, MA

I absolutely love thus large tumbler! This is one of an array of tumblers I have purchased from this talented artist and it is delightfully creative. It is also fun to hold, has beautiful fire effects going on, is a very solid piece, plus it is delightfully large relative to the other tumblers I have purchased. Almost a soup tumbler, which is awesome. In general, I could not be more pleased! :)

I absolutely love this wood fired tumbler. It is delightfully creative, has nice fire effects going on, is fun to hold and use, and in general, I could not be more pleased. Furthermore, the artist has been most helpful, and a pleasure to deal with. Lastly, this is one of around five of these I have purchased from this talented artist, and they are all a delight!

About

Like a River Wearing Away At the Earth

I grew up in the Blackstone River Valley in Massachusetts. I've always lived by water, on the river, vacations at Cape Cod with a collection of shells, and camping on lakes. The natural world has always been a part of my life and continues to inspire me to carve away at my pots, like a river wearing away at the earth, winding its way through the land.

I went to College at Maine College of Art in Portland, ME, a picturesque city, imitating a small town, set on a peninsula. Afterwards I went up the coast and was a resident at Watershed Center for Ceramic Arts. Back to the Blackstone Valley, and now in the Boston area, I have a studio at Feet of Clay in Brookline, MA.

For me, carving is meditation as much as it is design. I lose track of time and have to remind myself to take breaks to stretch.

Each pot comes out different and tells its own winding, flowing tale through its textures.

I do not glaze all of my pottery on the outside. I do this for a few reasons. First, I want to keep us as close to the texture as possible to be able to enjoy its tactility. Secondly, I want to keep the pots as closely connected to the earth and clay they are made from. On the inside I glaze so that the vessels are drink and food safe so that they can be used.

The wood fired pottery has some glaze out the outside since the wood ash turns to glaze at high temperatures. The direction of the flame leaves its mark and enhances the depth of the carving. This is also true for the soda fired pottery. Instead of ash, the soda solution sprayed into the kiln towards the end of the firing creates a glassy surface in some areas. These pots are made from stoneware and porcelain.

The more brightly colored or rusty red pottery is terracotta, also known as brick clay. The outside of many of these pots are painted with a fine particle clay slip called terrasigillata. This same material was used by many ancient cultures instead of glaze, including the Native Americans. The terrasigillata are buffed to produce a light sheen and waxy, soft feel that is pleasant to touch. Sometimes I instead use a clear glaze to let the brilliant brick red color show through.

I also experiment with mixing different colors of clay together. The swirling patterns of the clay are revealed and change as I carve, influencing and integrating with the designs. When I use two clay colors, I will chose one light and one dark for contrast, and then use the pottery wheel to make the shape. If I use glaze on the outside, it will be a clear glaze to make sure these patterns are left intact.

Finally, I will often trail lines, spirals, and dots of glaze using a squeeze bottle. These subtle designs create another layer of visual depth.
