About

Connecting You to Nature, One Piece at a Time.

My name is Carol, and I am the owner and artist behind CCreech Studio here in Ann Arbor, MI.

My creative journey has been a long, slow, winding road that somehow always seems to come back to drawing, nature and working with my hands.

Growing Up

As a child, I was always "making something." I spent hours carefully copying animal and nature note cards to learn how to draw. I made little purses with flaps and buttons for myself and bookmarks "laminated" with tape and finished with yarn tassels as gifts for my family. I even took a rainy Saturday and created an entire kitchen out of cardboard shoe boxes!

Discovery

I continued creating and drawing while growing up, but my first big "ah ha!" moment in my artistic development happened here in Ann Arbor. During graduate school for library science, I discovered a wonderful book at a remainder shop titled "Pen & Ink Techniques" by Frank Lohan. I purchased a fine point Rotring sketch pen and started copying drawings from the book. It was like coming home! I loved drawing in pen and ink and couldn't get enough of it. Pen and ink remains one of my very favorite media, and I often combine it with colored pencil in my nature artwork.

Natural Science Illustration and Botanical Art

After library school, I learned about an entire organization dedicated to natural science illustration called The Guild of Natural Science Illustrators (GNSI) and also found the American Society of Botanical Artists (ASBA). Joining these two amazing organizations and taking coursework in botanical illustration at Brookside Gardens in Maryland put me solidly on the path to focusing on botanical and nature art in my work.

Beads and Semi-Precious Gemstones

When my husband and I started a family, I found myself with less time for focused drawing projects, but craving texture and three-dimensional work. I discovered improvisational seed bead artwork and started down the path to working with all kinds of beautiful, natural semiprecious gemstones. Such gorgeous patterns, shapes and colors! I started creating beaded leather wrap bracelets and opened my Etsy shop with those. I sold one on my first day, which was very encouraging!

My Shop

My shop was born out of the bracelets, but I soon added more items that are practical as well as beautiful, including hand-bound artist journals using fine art papers, jotter journal sets featuring prints of my original botanical and nature artwork, and pendants and macramé bookmarks that highlight the gorgeous natural history found in the stones I use. I am really intrigued by the natural stones found here in Michigan and use those often in my work.

My Creative Goal

No matter what I create, my goal is to provide you with a high-quality piece made by my own hands; something that inspires you with a little “ah-ha!” of your own. Perhaps it is a favorite animal or plant charm that has meaning for you? Or maybe it is a perfectly sized mini-journal to take with your during your day for notes/creative writing/sketches? Or it could even be a single stone with just the right shape, color or perfect imperfection that makes you feel like you have found a part of yourself. Whatever you find, I hope that you enjoy the connection to nature and durable simplicity of each creation.
