About

The Certain Notions that Illuminate Me

I have always been excessively indecisive. A natural tendency possessed to my core producing ruthless criticism tracing as far back as I can remember. From family, friends, & mistakes with too much influence... people who wanted the best for me - or maybe they just wanted to possess - in any case knowingly or not helped shaped my psyche to slowly alter my concept of happiness: To win is to pick a path & stick to it. And art, was not the path I was “supposed” to be on.

I blame myself for not telling everyone to fuck off at that time. Most of all, society and its concept of success. But here’s the thing: While I chose a different path, I did give it my best shot, and I learned that it wasn’t for me.

I still had many successes. I’ve overcome hurdles that surprised me, guiding me towards who I am & what I’m capable of. I’ve done a good job with my multiple college degrees as an honor student, but it’s not what I was nurtured to expect from my life.

Now, I’m no longer on that path I forced in hopes of finding the societal idea of happiness. Instead, my journey paints a rendition of my inner self... An outward manifestation of my core being. It tells the story of a girl who’s a dreamer but with fierce determination & motivation: The living embodiment of a square peg trying to fit inside a round hole.

Yes, this is all different than my plan A, B, C, etc... But, being older with the benefit of perspective, I understand I was on a path rooted in “should”s (a word I censor), so, of course I would derail. And I did. AND THAT’S OK.

To realize now the direction to take I have ventured once before, to put my heart and soul - my everything - into art, makes my decision to change course easier. Though, it’s not a path consisting of a smooth, flat, open highway. Rather, it’s the dirt road you instinctively know leads off one side of that highway.

You know the one... It excites you! You squint your eyes & look for it in the distance as you mutter out loud, “It’s here somewhere!” Until, at last, you slam the breaks, roughly turn the steering wheel, and bump off the shoulder leaving a cloud of dust in your wake and no end in sight.

For all the bumps and rocky fragments I carry, the jagged edges that shaped who I am, certain notions illuminate how continuing traveling the flat highway, while not impossible, will continue to be a constant struggle, slowing me down in no predictable manner the further I go. Yet, by instead taking the dirt road - the one embracing its rugged terrain - I’m convinced along the way one of my peaks will find and fill a divot somewhere, like a perfect puzzle piece, and it is that moment I’ve chosen to pursue moving forward. Because, honestly... the gamble towards a life of fulfillment unquestionably dominates the assurance of being only content.

How’s that for decisive?
