About

A "Butterfly", a Beanie, and a Business

In 2012, I saw a copy of Wirework magazine and a picture of an amazing piece of jewelry...Rebecca Mojica's (Owner of Blue Buddha Boutique) Coiled Butterfly, I never knew that chainmaille was used for anything other than armor! I ordered the supplies and from my first encounter with a jump ring, I was hooked! To my further surprise, I discovered that I thoroughly enjoy designing and creating all different types of jewelry and I am constantly seeking to expand my skills.
Originally though, the idea for a jewelry business started in 2009. While I was hospitalized for a critical illness, a nurse commented on my beanie. Her daughter was receiving chemo treatments and she was unable to find a beanie soft enough for her sensitive skin that was also "pretty". The next day, my mom brought the nurse a super soft pale green beanie for her daughter. I was amazed and proud that she had stayed up all night to hand crochet a beanie for a total stranger and for no compensation but the look of happiness on a little girl's face! The nurse said we should sell them and a tiny seed was planted. The basis of the business initially was to sell "awareness" items and donate a portion of our profits to charity.
Though the face of the business has changed to offer more variety and a higher quality, we are still grounded by the belief that supporting charitable organizations benefits our customers and strengthens our business and community.
We are committed to donating 10% of our profits to a variety of causes at least yearly. In our initial year, we were able to make a donation to the Born This Way Foundation and blessed to be able to make quarterly donations to the Humane Society of San Antonio. Our goal for this year 2016 is to be able to make donations to the following: the VNA Hospice, the Humane Society of the United States, the Human Rights Campaign. Due to the discovery of misused donations, we will be choosing a different organization this year in support of our veterans. Additionally, certain items throughout the site are theme based and donations from the sale of those items will go to the represented cause (for example pink beanies = breast cancer)
Thank you for taking the time to read our story and thank you for visiting Chained Up Girl. We look forward to serving you in the coming year.

BRACELET SIZING:
Chainmaille bracelets:
For each chainmaille bracelet listed, the overall length of the bracelet as well as the size of the bracelet is provided. Many of our chainmaille bracelets can be resized to fit your needs. Sizes are based on the fastened inner circumference of a bracelet. This is a much more accurate determination of a bracelet's true size than the overall length measurement. This is due to the thickness of the materials (i.e. the thickness of the metal rings, the size of the beads, etc.) We use a commercial jeweler's tool called a "bracelet size gauge" to measure the inner circumference - thus the size - of each bracelet. Here is a home method you can use to determine if a chainmaille bracelet will fit you comfortably: cut a piece of string (non-stretchy) to the listed size and wrap it around your wrist. If the string fits you comfortably, so should the bracelet.

Leather Wrap bracelets:
Sizing information is provided in the individual listings. If you have any questions about sizing, please "convo" or email us. But in general, to determine if a bracelet will fit you comfortably, cut a piece of string (non-stretchy) to the listed bracelet size and wrap it around your wrist. If the string fits comfortably, so should the bracelet.

For any questions about bracelet sizes or for further assistance, please feel free to contact us.

We also strive to provide you with the highest quality materials. All of our Czech glass, gemstone beads, jump rings, leather, and Swarovski crystal components are purchased from well known, reputable suppliers. Our leather is generally the higher grade "Greek Leather" unless otherwise noted.

To the best of our knowledge, unless otherwise noted, all of our materials are lead and nickel free.

CARE RECOMMENDATIONS FOR LEATHER WRAP BRACELETS:
To ensure longevity of bracelets, avoid getting wet and use care when fastening button through closure. Many metals such as sterling silver and pewter can tarnish over time. If this occurs, the metal may be polished with a jewelry polishing cloth. To prevent tarnish, store in a closed container with an anti-tarnish strip. All our leather wrap bracelets are stored and shipped in sealed bags with an anti-tarnish strip.

CARE RECOMMENDATIONS FOR CHAINMAILLE BRACELETS:
Care of your chainmaille bracelet depends on the type of metal used.
Jewelry polishing clothes may be used on all types of metal to restore shine.

Aluminum: Currently this is our most prominent metal. Aluminum will not tarnish like other metals but can become dull over time. Aluminum may be washed gently with soap and water (we've seen the best results with dish soap - regular bar soap can leave a residue behind), rinsed thoroughly, then dried thoroughly. Aluminum should not be immersed in water for long periods of time but regular exposure is fine.

Stainless Steel: We offer a few bracelets in stainless steel. It too will not tarnish or rust. Stainless steel may be cleaned the same way as Aluminum (noted above). Prolonged exposure to water has no effect.

Sterling Silver: At times we offer sterling silver bracelets. Additionally, some components of other bracelets may be made of silver. Sterling silver will tarnish over time. Tarnish may be removed with a jewelry polishing cloth. Bracelets with sterling silver components or composed entirely of sterling silver should be stored in a closed container with an anti-tarnish strip.

Pewter: Though none of our bracelets are made entirely from pewter, some components may be. Care for pewter is the same as for sterling silver.

Other bracelets: for materials not listed above, if special treatment is required it will be posted in the listing.

For any other questions regarding care or other topics not covered in our policies please feel free to contact us.
