ARTIST STATEMENT
My photograph methods use painterly gesture to transform urban and natural environments into abstract images. A painter by training, I find my ideal palette in the world around me – the golden hour for luminous saturated hues, a wintry dawn for rusty orange leaves and periwinkle blue shadows, a rainy cityscape for bright light reflections against strong architectural lines. Using camera as brush, I leverage long exposure and gesture to transform my surroundings into abstract imagery. I'm intrigued by this transition from visible environment to abstracted image, and with the surprising ties that bind the two together.

Simply stunning. The colors are mesmerizing and they really do resemble Van Gogh's thick paint. This will hang in my studio to inspire my jewelry-making. I look forward to following Charity's work - she is very talented!

Charity's image captures the picturesque setting so well. Isn't it beautiful? I'm planning to get winter and spring prints to go with my summer and fall prints so that I can display a complete seasonal collection of Charity's work.

About

Between Paris and a day job

My first camera was a Kodak 110 film camera I bought in grade school. I remember being so glad I used 110 film, because 35mm looked so confusing :) A few years later, I got my first "oh, we have to enlarge this and frame it" shot of the St Louis Arch, when traveling with that same camera to St Louis with my grandparents.

Eventually I grew up and went to college, completing an art degree in Painting and Drawing. WIth only one class in photography, you would think my path would be set: oils and canvas forever! Practicality set in, however - there is only so much closet space in a city apartment, whether you're in Chicago as I was, or NYC as I am now. With closets full of paintings, I needed another outlet for image-making.

Cue a two week vacation to Paris in May of 2012.

I shot hundreds of images in those fifteen days, walking everywhere with my Nikon Coolpix L22 - a pocket-sized point-and-shoot with decent megapixels. Shooting all day, editing into the night and posting only the best to Facebook - I was on cloud nine. How could I bring Paris home with me? How could I make this bliss part of everyday life?

I launched my etsy photography shop immediately, in June of 2012. Using it as motivation, I kept shooting when I got home, and kept traveling and bringing home hundreds, even thousands of images to edit for weeks after my trips. That fall I upgraded to a "real" camera - I'm working with a Nikon D3200 these days, and loving it. In December of 2012 I started my photo blog, and continue to post new work there regularly. http://charitykittlerphotography.blogspot.com/

What's next? Fans will see new listings almost daily now, both individual images and sets. Most photographs can be ordered in a range of sizes, and if you need a custom size, just message me to see if we can work something out.

Looking for help creating a group of images? I love to give ideas on which images work well together.

Curious if I shoot other genres? In fact, I shot my first wedding in the summer of 2014, followed by my first engagement shoot and family portrait session. Take a look!

I'm exploring any and all opportunities to spend time with my camera :) Let me know if you'd like your portrait taken, or need a photographer for a special event. I'm in!

Of course, all photographs are taken and edited by me. My uncle, also a professional photographer, recommended this lab to me, and I haven't looked back. Their excellent quality is perfectly showcased by larger prints.
