Very pleased with this pattern! Had it done within two days and the instructions were very clear and well written. I used thin wale corduroy (the plaid) and a rust upholstery fabric.

About

Harking back to another era

I have been sewing and making things for as long as I can remember – and have always had a yearning for the past. A happy childhood spent in the beautiful east of England countryside with its quaint heritage villages and stunning coastline – plus wonderful grandparents who constantly told me stories of village life during the 40s and 50s – also helped shape my tastes and aspirations. Although I was always going to write for a living, my love of sewing and vintage fashions has come a close second throughout my life. So much so that I now split my time between my day job as chief reporter for a regional daily newspaper in Suffolk, and designing vintage-inspired sewing patterns under the Charlie’s Aunt label. I was nine years old when I drafted my first soft toy pattern and in my early teens when I designed and made a fancy pair of dungarees from an old curtain. I was never happier than when I was given a pattern or a kit for a present rather than a finished item, and I was delighted and inspired by a box of beautiful vintage haberdashery that I inherited from a family friend who was a dressmaker during the 40s and 50s.
So after working as a broadcast journalist for several years, I decided to start my own business designing vintage style clothing which I thoroughly enjoyed. I also authored three design books which went down very well with the crafting public. With a talent for technical writing and drafting patterns, plus a resurgence in the interest in stitch crafts and vintage worldwide, the transition into sewing patterns was a natural progression for me.
The Charlie’s Aunt range now features more than 30 PDF sewing patterns for vintage inspired fashion accessories – mainly bags and hats. I am particularly fond of handbags and the endless design possibilities they offer, my favourite period being the 1940s "make do and mend" era, and the slightly more frivolous styles of the 1950s. The patterns are entirely designed, drafted, written, illustrated, tested and published by me. I use mainly British wool, cotton and linen fabrics for my sample bags and I also sell some select pieces of silk and wool fabric in my shop, alongside other vintage or retro haberdashery that will help my customers to fashion their bags in true Charlie’s Aunt style. I hope you get as much fun from making my bags as I have from designing them.

Important Copyright Information:

Although all of my patterns and books are covered by the copyright and patents act, I realise that several of my customers would like to be able to make a few items from my patterns to sell, so I have decided to allow it again, as long as they stick to the following rules:

* Make no more than 10 bags in a year to sell from any one Charlie’s Aunt pattern, and up to a MAXIMUM of 40 bags in total from a combination of any of my patterns in a year. Please don’t make any more than this – I have more than 20 different sewing patterns and it simply wouldn't be fair to buy 15 and make 10 of each, because you would be adopting my entire concept that way. If you intend to make any more than 40 in a year, this would be deemed a big business and would be totally against the rules. Please respect this!

* Write on each swing ticket and in all Etsy/online descriptions the following words: “This bag was made using a Charlie’s Aunt sewing pattern designed by Emma Brennan”. A link to my Etsy shop would also be greatly appreciated. Please don’t put your own designer labels in my designs – that isn’t fair!

* Please have the courtesy to drop me a line to ask if you can make the bags to sell. This way I can keep track of who’s doing what and I can hopefully persuade you to share photos of the bags you make on the Charlie’s Aunt Facebook site.

* All items for sale must be handmade by you. Contracting with others to mass produce Charlie’s Aunt designs is STRICTLY PROHIBITED.

* Distribution of the pattern pieces and corresponding instructions is STRICTLY PROHIBITED. Please do not copy my patterns in any way. The words, diagrams and pictures are covered by copyright and I will pursue anyone who infringes this.

* Finally, please be respectful my designs and policies. Being allowed to make a limited number of bags from my patterns to sell is a privilege and not a right.

Please email me at emma [!at] charliesaunt.com if you have any questions

PDF PATTERNS:

The PDF patterns contain instructions, illustrations, photographs and pattern templates for one style of bag, purse or fashion accessory. The templates are full size and can be printed on A4 paper, but some templates need to be joined together with tape because they are too big to fit on one page. All patterns contain detailed instructions on how to cut and join pattern templates.
