Art To Accent Your Life

Welcome to Chasing Fire! We are located in beautiful Calgary, Alberta within a short trip of the amazing foothills of the Rockies. The sky is huge. The inspiration is limitless.

Our studio is now powered by 25% renewable electricity as we hope to support renewable energy sources - in the same spirit that we create re-usable containers for your beverages and slippers soles to increase the longevity of your footwear.

The studio started with a simple community pottery class in 2002, igniting a passion for clay. I worked out of community studios, sharing equipment since it is very expensive to purchase. A flash of luck: Jay did some roofing work in exchange for a kiln, we made space for clay work at home and then I stumbled across a unique hand forged wheel = our dream of our own studio in 2011.

Cara: While the wheel is my original passion, I have become taken by the amazing flexibility that is hand-building since the birth of our son in 2009. You will often see a variety of methods as I create using textures, my own glazes, and fibre-inspired functional wares as well as sculptural work.

Jason: I joined joined the studio work to create mugs and yarn bowls. I like details, texture, and humour to be reflected in my work

We take great pride in our work and hope that you enjoy our items as much as we have enjoyed creating them. We use local suppliers (including Ceramics Canada, Plainsman Clays and local printers) and etsy sellers to bolster my "local" communities.

We now have a website that details our creative process, what's going on at the studio and in our little creative circle: http://www.chasingfirestudio.com

The name “chasing fire” comes from the core of ceramics – the transformation of clay through flame. Today, we as ceramic artists often use enclosed kilns, electric or gas fueled, to "fire" our work. The flame is concealed unlike the visible rawness of pit or raku firing. We only have to revisit the raku process (light it all on fire!) to remind ourselves of the core beauty of this art form, taking what is mud and creating art through fire. Thus, our passion for this art is represented by our need to always be chasing that transformation, chasing fire.

  • Cara

    Owner, Maker, Designer

I'm a prairie girl, born and bred in small town Saskatchewan. My passions are split between technology and fine arts. I first sat at a pottery wheel in 2002 and fell in love. Making beautiful things from mud is magic.

  • Jay

    Owner, Maker, Kiln Tech

Jay is a ceramic and leather artist when not servicing our kiln, making tools for the studio, and running firings. His creations are functional tableware with a twist, influenced by car & geek culture, and his Irish Canadian Heritage.

Welcome to Chasing Fire! Our ceramic items are all hand made mid-fire ceramics out of our own home studio. While the wheel is my passion, I have become entranced by the amazing flexibility that is hand-building. You will often see a variety of methods as I play, because Chasing Fire is my creative play, my happy place and my passion.

We take great pride in my work and hope that you enjoy our items as much as we have enjoyed creating them. We tend to use only local suppliers (Ceramics Canada and Plainsman Clays) and etsy sellers to bolster our "local" communities because we love "our" people.

We have a website that details our creative process, what's going on at the studio and in our little creative neck of the woods: http://www.chasingfirestudio.com

Shipping
All items are shipped via Canada Post or Chit Chats USPS courier for large items to the US to provide the most economical solution for your purchase. Flat items such as slipper soles and buttons do not have tracking and they do not have insurance. Buttons, pendants, slipper soles, and bookmarks are shipped in envelopes. Cufflinks are shipped in small kraft boxes within a cushion envelope. I ship out items within 3 days of payment confirmation (M-F) unless it is a Made To Order item, and then shipping logistics are listed within the item details. If you want a rush order, tracking, insurance or require express post, please contact me BEFORE ordering so that I can get you a quote for shipping. Heads, mugs, yarn bowls are sent with tracking in boxes with much bubblewrap, crumpled paper, and prayers to the postal workers to treat them kindly. You will be provided with the tracking number when we send them off into the world towards you.

We cannot guarantee shipping times once packages have been dropped at the postal outlets. If I could, I would, but I cannot. Sometimes it may take weeks to receive your order once it leaves my door if customs is involved, and I cannot help this however I do everything in my power to ensure a smooth transition by filling out all paperwork because we have experience with this! During the holiday season, allow some extra time for delivery because your local mailcentre is overwhelmed.

My shipping amount includes postage PLUS the cost of shipping supplies: kraft bubble envelope, boxes, bubble wrap for protection of your purchase.

Insurance, customs, tracking, express post are paid for by the purchaser.

Please see this link to check the actual costs of sending items with Canada Post: http://www.canadapost.com

If you are in Calgary, you can do local pickup with coupon code YYCPICKUP. We are located in the far southeast in McKenzie Towne and we'll arrange a time for you to pickup. Thank you!

Slipper soles are washable by hand - I use Euchlan and once dry, bend them and rub them together to bring them to softness again.

Frequently asked questions
Are ceramics (pottery) dishwasher and microwave safe?

Yes! We do suggest extra care when loading/unloading as accidents tend to happen during cleaning and when holding very hot liquids.

How do I sew on my slipper soles?

We created a YouTube video to show you how we sew on our slipper soles to crochet/knitted slippers:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rCGSXWUua9o

Are your slipper soles washable?

We handwash our slippers and soles with woolwash (due to the nature of the slippers that the soles are sewn to) and airdry.
