Checa Designs is a local handmade accessory brand based in Miami, Fl. Founded in 2020 by me, and which continues to grow with the amazing help of my family, from my mom who cuts the fabric, to my husband who gets the elastics in the scrunchies.

MY STORY
When I was little, my Abuelita (grandmother) used to take care of me and my big brother while our parents went to work. She was a self-taught seamstress. I used to watch her make dresses for her customers. I was so impressed with the love she poured on every fabric she cut and sewed.

What I remember the most was her humming to music she played on the radio, and also the way she “blessed” the fabric before cutting it. I also do this now, don’t judge me. The first thing she taught me was to make scrunchies, and skirts for my Barbies, and I guess that’s what started my love for handmade things.

I went into fashion after I graduated highschool back in Venezuela, that’s where I was born, and I did it for a couple of years until we moved here to the United States. After studying english as my second language, I went to college to study graphic design. I worked for 14 years as a graphic designer, which was good, but I knew deep down it was just not what I really wanted to do. I still had that little voice in my head telling me I should be doing something else. And then, the pandemic happened.

I was furlough from my job in March of 2020, and like many people, I had a family to support and we were only getting by with my husband as the sole provider for the time being, so I knew I had to figure out a way to generate extra income. I made a couple of headbands and started posting them on instagram and also offering them to friends and family. People started buying them and telling me how pretty they were and that I should start my own business. And here I am! A year later with my own website!

This is what I love the most! I love creating something beautiful with just fabric and my sewing machine. I love pouring all my love into something with the hope that people will also feel the same love while wearing my products.

Life is too short, follow your dreams and silence that voice that tells you that you are not good enough. I truly believe that if you’re consistent with your work, there’s nothing that you can’t achieve.
