Wow! This exceeded every expectation I had! I am looking forward to framing this literary thumbprint and giving it to my husband on his birthday. Great personal service. Quick service. Love it! Thanks so much, Cheryl!

This is a present for my wife. The artwork is absolutely beautiful, and my wife couldn't be happier with her present. Cheryl is a joy to work with.

About

Art Inspired by Stories

I make art that is inspired by stories - both those in the books that I read, as well as those of you, the client!

I began nearly fifteen years ago as a photography major at the Massachusetts College of Art & Design in Boston, creating vignettes with pages from books and photographing them with an old 4x5 view camera (you know, with the dark cloth and the bellows....), capturing all the gorgeous fibrous details of the book pages and the letters on them on the huge negatives.

At some point I set the camera aside and began creating things with book pages for their own sake, rather than for the sake of the resulting photograph. Loathe to destroy books (being an avid reader and booklover and all), I set up a crazy set of parameters for myself that the books' stories must remain in their entirety in each work - and in readable order. This led to some HUGE pieces, up to eight feet (The Odyssey) and eleven feet (Moby Dick) in diameter!

I have since eased up a bit and set aside that particular rule and begun making all manner of smaller forms from texts. Whew. Though still many of my works, especially custom, collaborative works like the thumbprint portraits in which I gather hundreds of images catered to the client's interests, can still be dozens of hours worth of work!

My work has been exhibited in numerous galleries and museums on both coasts, in New York, Boston and California, including WorkSpace Gallery in NYC, The Photographic Resource Center at Boston University, Copley Society in Boston, The Museum of Photographic Arts and the San Diego Art Institute in San Diego, The Torrance Art Museum and the Long Beach Museum of Art. One piece of mine (the gigantic Moby Dick piece) is a part of the Yale Museum of Art's permanent collection.

I have received a number of awards for my work, most notably a travel grant to photograph in Rio de Janeiro from MassArt and a fellowship at the MacDowell Colony in Peterborough, New Hampshire.

If you're interested in checking out all the press about my work (especially about my thumbprint portraits), feel free to google me or check out my web site press page.

Much of the work I do these days is custom, collaborative work in which I work with you, the client, to personalize a piece - thumbprint portrait, couple portrait, maps collage, ketubah, you name it - with all the things that are special to you. It could be favorite books, quotes, song lyrics, places traveled, wedding vows, hobbies & passions, anything! I am always trying new things and am always open to thoughts on how to make a piece truly, uniquely you. So feel free to hit me up with your questions and ideas.

Thanks so much for taking the time to read up about me. I look forward to working with you!
