Paintings dripping with color

I am an Australian-Canadian artist, currently living in rural southwestern Ontario, Canada.
I paint portraits of children, animals and nature.

I started selling my art on Etsy in 2008 and I've had the wonderful opportunity to form relationships with customers all around the world.

If you see something in my shop that you'd like in a different size, or if you might want something painted especially for you, please just send me a message and we'll work out the details. I'm always happy to work with clients to create something special.

My art has been featured on sleepwear by Macy's, New York - I am open to commercial licensing opportunities and can work within tight deadlines if needed.

Additional policies and FAQs

The best portraits start with good lighting. Shadows are very important when painting a portrait, as the shadows cast by the nose, cheeks, and other features, are what the artist uses to depict the features.

If you are taking your own photos for me to use for a child's portrait, here are some guidelines:

1) Single source lighting (no flash).
You can achieve this in a few different ways. The easiest method is to choose a bright day and put someone outside the window to attract the child's attention. Keep the lights dim in the house, and start taking photos of the child while her attention is focused outside. Say a few words to get her attention, and be ready to snap away, when she looks at you. Half of her face will be lit by the light from the window - gorgeous!
Another method is to set up a lamp (like a desk lamp - so you can focus the light on one side of her face and a little above it) beside the child while she is engaged in a favourite activity, either watching TV, playing a puzzle, listening to a story (my fave) etc. Then try and take photos without the flash if possible.

2) Natural Expression.
The best portraits are usually when the child is not smiling, but more pensive or thoughtful.
This way the eyes can be painted naturally open instead of creased with a smile. You'll have lots of snapshots and school photos with your child smiling, but a painted portrait is better if they are "at rest".

3) Profile.
A slight profile is the most flattering. If you cannot achieve the correct lighting conditions to create pleasing shadows, the next best thing is to photograph your child's face in profile (turned away from the camera a little, or full profile makes for an interesting portrait also)
note - my fees are less for full profile portraits - please inquire if you are interested.

I cannot stress how important it is to NEVER USE A FLASH for portrait studies.
