A strong gust of wind blew this pot at a show and my 81 year old Mum caught it! I then sold it a couple of hrs later!
Sculptural pots and jewellery to create a unique look in your home and on you!
I love to create pieces of work and always have. After completing my 'A' levels I took an Honorary degree in Art and design and specialised in ceramics.
I love how creativity in our world tells stories of cultures and traditions and how it shows we are so appreciative of our beautiful surroundings that we want to some how' capture' it and put it into a still form.
I smoke-fire my pots in sawdust in an incinerator in the garden. It has taken me years to get the combination of sawdust and heat correct to produce a good result. I often use gold lustre which is fired onto the pot before smoke-firing. I have to be careful that the temperature of the smoke-firing doesn't burn all of the gold lustre away. The lustres I use give a lovely crackled texture due to the glaze I use underneath.
Sometimes my pots remind me of distant planets and when I'm watching the flames I think about the big bang and how all the chemicals bonded together to create life. When you are creating pieces it does remind you of the awesomness of life!
I try to give my jewellery a unique look by experimenting with and mixing lustres and glazes. The pendants are attached to adjustible leather thongs so they can be worn at any length.
The earrings are really light weight and attached to sterling silver or vermeil findiings.
People tell me they are very comfortable to wear.
I think it is heart warming that so many people love to give unique presents to their friends
which is why I also make all of the boxes for my jewellery as it just finishes off the completely handmade and unique quality.
I also have a my own website, www.claireceramics.co.uk or www.claireseneviratne.co.uk with more examples of my work which again are for sale. I have recently started to exhibit at global art fairs. I started with one in Chelsea London, it was a great success and so I then applied to a big global art fair in Oxford that will be in February 2016. I have been lucky enough to have been selected to be featured in their next hardback book titled 'Excellence in contemporary art-investable artists 2016'. My work is also featured in various additions of the Craft Potters Association, 'The ceramics book', of which I am a professional member. My work can also be found at various galleries around Great Britain.
