Find out a little bit more about myself and my designs....

Who are you and where are you based?

I’m Vicky Rowe and I design unique intricately hand embellished wedding dresses evocative of the 1920’s and 1930’s but with a more contemporary and bohemian feel for today’s bride.

I live in Mid-Wales in a 16th Century Farmhouse on the edge of the Snowdonia National Park surrounded by breathtaking countryside, it was one of many small farmsteads that once dotted the valley. Part of the farmhouse houses my studio, I find working in these surrounding really inspirational.

Why did you start designing wedding dresses?

As far back as I can remember I've always had a passion for beautiful dresses.

My mother wore gorgeous floor-length embellished dresses for functions and parties that mesmerized me, I think that’s when my love of glamorous dresses started. During my early teens I became very interested in vintage clothing, this meant scouring thrift shops and repurposing garments to fit or making something from a vintage fabric. One of my favourite creations from that time was a gold floor length evening dress that was fashioned from some vintage fabric, complete strangers would come up to me in the street and ask me where I bought it and when I told them they wanted me to make one for them.

Vicky Rowe - Romantic hand beaded bridal gowns with a more contemporary feel for today's bride
When I was in my 20s I spent a few years travelling around Asia, and during that time I became really interested in the crafts and embellishments from those countries and the artisans who made them. These were the skills that had been used in the past on 1920s dresses and which still exist in the couture fashion houses. I love the one off dresses that grace the runways at the London and Paris fashion weeks, with their jaw-dropping designs and exquisite embellishment.

A few years later I got engaged myself and had to find a wedding dress. I suddenly found myself thrust into this big white world I didn't really connect with. I have a bit of a rebellious streak, and I’d already been seriously questioning what ‘traditional’ wedding dresses were in the first place. Why does everyone consider a big white dress to be essential, just because Queen Victoria wore white when she married Albert? The whole tradition is actually less than 200 years old; prior to this..

I didn't really enjoy the bridal dress shopping experience. I found the whole thing very daunting, and I didn't even want to step foot in a bridal shop. So, I bought the first white beaded dress I tried on, knowing that what I really wanted did not exist. Now, when I look back at my wedding pictures, I can’t help thinking that the look I ended up with was not entirely me, but if I had found the dress of my dreams I wouldn't be here today writing this.

What was your first design?

My first design was Rebecca. It holds a very special place in the collection as peoples response to it was wonderful.

How would you describe your signature style?

I love the intricate bead and sequin embellishment from the 20's which abruptly stopped during the Great Depression, I'm imagining what this decadent beadwork might have looked like had it continued into the 30’s. I’m just really enjoying exploring and experimenting with different designs and materials right now.

What did you do before you started designing wedding dresses?

In my other life I was a project manager before giving it up to work full time on a business that has started out as a hobby. I ran a successful china hire company formed in 2008 (supplied Fortnum and Mason) and alongside ran fascinator and hat making workshops for hens all over the country, these were the first of their kind in the country. I found myself taking commissions for headpieces and hats and giving styling advice for weddings.

Which is your favourite design to date?

It's difficult to pick just one as they’re all special for a variety of different reasons, but if I had to pick just one, it would be ‘Rose’. I have a lovely rambling white rose in my garden that envelopes a dead tree in the summer, the scent is incredible and one day I found myself sketching the roses and using it on a design I was working on. Rose has over 140 intricate roses on it and its simplicity makes it such an elegant dress.

What have been your greatest achievements so far?

I’m still at the start of my career as a designer, but having some of my designs and my own wedding featured in Annabel Beeforths best selling book ‘Style me Vintage’ has been a big highlight; having my Primrose gown featured in a Spanish publication next to an Elie Saab gown was very flattering, to have one of my designs next to such an incredible designer as him was such an honour. Its work like his which has inspired me in the first place. I've also had my dresses featured in ‘You and Your Wedding’ Magazine and many bridal blogs like Love My Dress.

Then of course there was ‘Brides the Show 2014’ in London, a fabulous bridal show wher
