ABOUT HAND PAINTED...What's the difference from screen printing? It is "one" with the fabric. No shiny, sticky or coating on top that may possibly peel or crack at a later date. The paint I use penetrates the fabric, and the art will last FAR longer than the bag ever will!! Absolutely no cracking or peeling - ever! I often recommend when the bag wears out (sorry, but as great as my bags are they will eventually wear out. Life happens!) simply cut out the art and apply/stitch/glue to another bag! The art is FOREVER! Paint is awesome! Absolutely hand washable, it will not affect the art!

HAND PAINTED! Awww yeah! I am so proud and pleased to offer ONLY hand painted and genuine vintage bags. It fits so well with the Handmade and vintage venue that IS Etsy. Are there quicker, less expensive ways to reproduce an image? Of course! And I’d be lying if I said I hadn’t checked them out. BUT…I always come back to Hand Painted. Granted it does take more time, therefore a few more $ than other methods, but one can be proud to say, “Hey, it’s hand painted.” It’s so very, very cool.

PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE check dimensions/size of the bags! They are described in each listing. Grab a ruler or measuring tape to ensure your things will fit and it's the right size bag for you. Measure a current bag that you have to see if it's similar in size.

NOTE: The US Postal Service has had a price increase as of January 17, 2016 ;-( But it's still a small price to pay to get your hands on one of these awesome bags and have it delivered right to your door!

ABOUT VINTAGE MILITARY...Seriously, one day here, the next day not. I try my best to keep up, but often I am more surprised than you that I cannot get a bag. I search long and hard, and then work long and hard to clean and make these bags something I would want to carry. With each and every one, I would not hesitate to put a baby’s diaper in it! But also, please do not hesitate to order as I really have no idea how long I will be able to get them. Today my supply may be good, tomorrow – nothing. It’s a very strange, but exciting, business! Please do not hesitate to ask questions!

Colors & Shades - As they are vintage military and each one is different, there may be slight variations in colors and shading. Monitor colors vary also.

ABOUT PAINTING IN GENERAL...
Each item takes (minimally) three layers of paint. Depending on the canvas or leather it could take more depending on the color, vintage, etc. So many variables! It is truly a labor of love for me and my two assistants. Granted…they don’t provide much actual painting assistance. At best, they clamor for biscuits or a pat on the head. Try as I might, they just can’t seem to hold a paint brush – must be that thumb thing! But they do offer tremendous moral support, along with a bark or two, while I paint the days away ;-)
==================================================================

~~ ☆ INTERNATIONAL FRIENDS - Please note: I ship via First Class International Mail which does NOT include tracking or insurance. If you would like to add these services to secure your shipment, please message me.

NOTE - It is extremely rare, but some countries may charge additional duties on parcels. This is not within my control and seldom happens.

How cool is this bag! Only drawback is my girlfriend stole it from me the moment arrived. It was just the bag she was looking for. Even though it was mine. Beautiful work. Thank you.

I love this bag, it's cute and not super flashy. It has a good amount of space for a book or a water bottle. I'm definitely taking this with me wherever I go

About

I need to call Military Bags Anonymous - I'm obsessed!

Never in my wildest imagination did I ever think I'd be such a geek over Vintage Military Bags! It surely didn't fit in with raising two children (who are now grown) or working in marketing at a bank for years - but it's exactly where I landed when I finally grew up! I couldn't be more thrilled with my work choice. This is my day job, night job and weekend job - I work a lot, but I love what I do!

When I get an order of bags in I am worse than a little kid at the gate of Disneyland! Before I even open the box I can smell the decades old must and I just smile, knowing they are going to be goodies if they smell that bad. So many are stored in caves in Europe, old warehouses and haven't been touched since they were used. I'm rather a mess after going through them - they are dirty, smelly, musty and often moldy. I can't even tell you how many pieces of petrified food I have found in these bags.

There are treasures too, quite rare, but always such a joy to find. It may be a spoon, compass, napkin, handkerchief or even an old love letter. When I do find a treasure I mark the bag and catalog the treasure. After cleaning, the treasure goes right back in that very bag. I feel it belongs with the bag and the sold of the soldier who carried it.

Then comes the not-so-fun part, the extensive cleaning. But it truly is the most important. My family always knows when I get an order in - they walk in the front door, take one sniff and inevitably say, "You got a bag order in, huh?" Having worked with all these varying canvases, the stains, food debris, etc. I have redefined the term "Queen of Clean." Using a variety of cleaning cocktails I can turn the grossest bag into one that's pristine enough or a baby's diaper or pacifier.

I even go so far as to iron them so they look awesome and are ready to use right out of the box when you get your parcel. Periodically a very old bag with a piece of leather trim MAY have the teeniest bit of a musty smell in the leather, but that goes away quickly. The bag is still amazingly clean.

A lot of time is spent pouring over old military museum web sites, manuals and so on so I understand the exact use and origin of the bag. They are all such terrific pieces of history and filled with so much soul. I am forever on the look out for a bag that can be refuntioned into one for todays use.

I do carry some new bags as well, most are of the "vintage style" and are clearly labeled as such. With any (vintage or new) I can hand paint about design on about any bag. I use a special paint made for leather that penetrates the fibers as opposed to just sitting on top. It will not crack, wear off or peel. Most all can be hand washed in mild water and air dried with no concern to the paint or art.

I'm just a quirky, crazy lady with a love for vintage military bags and painting. What could be a more perfect mix?

Frequently asked questions

Will my computer fit in this bag?

Dimensions for all bags are listed. If you're still not sure, please send me the dimensions of your computer and I'll check it out for you.

Can I wash the bag? Will it hurt the art?

Any vintage bag can be hand washed in mild soap and line dried. Hand washing will not affect the art - the paint is permanent. It will also not affect leather trims on vintage bags. The only exceptions would be a few of the newer styles like the vertical messenger with a hard backerboard in it or the new laptop bags with leather trims.

How long does it take for custom or personalized art?

It depends on the time of year with my painting schedule , but generally no more than 3 - 5 additional days.

Do you have an additional charge for custom or personalized art?

If it's of similar detail and one color like others in my shop it'll vary between $5 - $10. If it's more detail and additional colors I can provide you with a quote.

I see a specific design I would like, but I don't see it on the bag I want. Can you paint it on another bag?

This is the beauty of hand painting! Most all of the art can be painted on about any bag, unless there is a size limitation. You choose your bag and you choose your art!

Will I be getting the exact bag in the picture?

More than likely not. Each style of bag is exactly the same configuration. It may vary slightly in shade or wear/storage marks on vintage bags. I have chosen to do this to keep costs at a reasonable price. If I were to take photos of each bag, by the time I color correct, crop, and edit photos there would be an increase of approximately $10 per bag. If there is something markedly different in the bag I will either note that or I will do a separate listing.
