    About Cobaltquilter

    Cobaltquilters Corner

I have been sewing since childhood. My mother is an amazing seamstress, I aspire to her exactness! Art quilting since I moved to Washington state in 2002, I also joined Quiltart.com, a list serve of textile and fiber artists from around the world. I began exploring surface design as well as piecing possibilities with my work.

I enjoy exploring fabric manipulation techniques as well as embellishment possibilities. Smaller work is often done as a series, in stages.

In 2007 I opened my Etsy Shop and began the journey to self representing artist. My Local Etsy team is quite active, we meet monthly. It as my check in, "Am I moving forward with that self representing part?" So much more of a challenge than I anticipated! My youngest son calls it self advocacy.

I have recently been exploring more reclaiming/repurposing/recycling of fabrics, including knitting and broomstick lace making. The resulting scarves and floor mats are fun and interesting. Most of my yarn I have acquired through gifting, thrifting, and estate sales. Left overs from current projects add to the mix.

I continue to teach, over thirty years, now. After 20 years in a classroom, I have been in private supplementary education since 2003. Something about demystifying learning for kids fills my soul.

In August 2012, I opened a brick and mortar shop/studio/gallery inside The Olympia Flea Market, 210 Thurston Ave. downtown Olympia, Washington. I had been setting up my wares the first weekend of the month, in a booth in the open warehouse, on and off for over a year before I made the leap to a full time studio space.

Born and raised in New England the swap-meet/flea market atmosphere is comfortingly familiar. I remember spending hours as a kid at the local historical society. Their collection and display was fascinating. There were even one or two of those quaint antique shops within walking distance of where I grew up.

I am at the studio on Saturdays and Sundays, 10 AM -5 PM creating, cleaning old sewing machines, or sorting and organizing vintage and surplus notions.

My latest mantra~ Just keep sewing, sewing, sewing!
