Many of you know me from the days when ColorShift offered gradated sets of hand-dyed yarn. The shop was wildly successful, actually too successful for me. The work was stressful, exhausting, and there was always a long waiting list of orders, a cornucopia of problems to solve, strict high standards to uphold and a bleak future of cranking out replicas instead of creating. Stumbling out of bed at 4:00 in the morning to make 30 more of something is the picture, a 14-hour day distinguished from hundreds before and after it only by the kinds of problems that arise.

People who dream of quitting their day jobs to pursue a creative career may picture adding a brilliant stroke to a clever idea while sipping coffee in a trendy studio, but my Etsy life had become the day (and night) job that I wanted to quit.

I retooled. Now, when I step into my studio, I am at once surrounded by a wonderful society, characters from my imagination, each smiling in its special way. Smiles can express and evoke a great range of messages and emotions. It is a grand adventure to explore the nuances of smiles and to develop new characters to express them.

In this context, maintaining high standards is no longer a crushing obligation. It is a privilege. Problems present fascinating opportunities to learn, and most days go by far too quickly. I love creating these joyful personalities, gifts that are always welcome no matter the recipient (even that person who is hard to buy for or even for yourself), no matter the occasion (or just because).

I am no longer dyeing ColorShift yarns, but my book, Color in Black and White, is still available in this shop.

These policies outline expectations of fairness on both sides. I strive to portray and describe my items and manner of doing business as accurately as possible, but I may inadvertently omit information that you feel is important. Please take the time to examine the photos, read these policies and the item descriptions. Please contact me with any questions you may have PRIOR to purchase.

Returns and exchanges

Because of the nature of these items, unless they arrive damaged or defective, I can't accept returns for:

Returns and exchange details
If you are not happy with your purchase, please let me know and I will effect the fastest and most satisfactory resolution. I do accept cancellations within four hours of purchase unless your item has already been processed for shipping.

The return and refund process begins with your notifying me. If you have a problem, we will reach a solution that is fair. Don't just ship the item back or leave negative feedback instead of contacting me.

Refunds and exchanges are granted with free shipping if your item is flawed or was misrepresented. You must contact me within 3 days of receipt and ship the item back within 7 days. I will provide your return prepaid shipping label and a prompt refund.

If you have purchased on impulse and changed your mind or just aren't too crazy about the item in person but it has not been misrepresented and is not damaged, you pay for the return, including tracking and full insurance and ship it within 7 days of when it was originally delivered to you. If the item is not returned in its original condition, you are responsible for any loss in value.

Refunds and exchanges are transacted with the original purchaser only.

If your parcel gets lost in transit, the USPS and/or third-party insurer will require information from you to process the insurance payment. If your parcel is returned by the postal service as unclaimed, you will be requested to pay the return shipping.

All returned items must be in the same condition that they were when you received them, with the original packaging, labels and cards.
You can use your credit card or you can transact through PayPal without having to have a PayPal account. Etsy gift cards are accepted.
If you wish your parcel to be shipped to an address other than the one you have registered with Etsy, please indicate this in the "Notes" section of your order. I will include a gift card with your personal message and cute gift bags are available. Shipping is prompt, insured and tracked.

Please keep your email address current with Etsy for automatic downloads of PDFs and notification of convos.
Additional policies and FAQs
If you have a problem with your order, we will solve it. Negative feedback is not a solution if you do not give me a chance to attend to your satisfaction.
I will never share your information with marketers. If you hear from me personally, it will be to find out how to best customize service for your order or to respond to a message you sent me. If you receive a marketing message with information from my shop, it will be because you have opted in and signed up for such notification through Etsy. If you want to change your settings adjust your level of notifications in your account. Go to "Account Settings" and select the "Emails" tab. Uncheck the "Coupons and Promotions" box.

You may also receive email from Etsy prompting you to leave feedback. As a buyer on Etsy, I find this annoying and there is no way to turn it off. I don't personally send these messages to customers and regretfully cannot prevent them from landing in your inbox. The "Feedback" options in the email settings refers to something else, feedback Etsy seeks on general topics.

This privacy policy describes how and when I collect, use, and share information when you purchase an item from me, contact me, or otherwise use my services through or its related sites and services.

This privacy policy does not apply to the practices of third parties that I do not own or control, including Etsy or any third party services you access through Etsy. You can reference the Etsy privacy policy to learn more about its privacy practices.

Your Rights: (1) Access. You may have the right to access and receive a copy of the personal information I hold about you by contacting me. (2) You may also have rights to change, restrict my use of, or delete your personal information when there are no pending transactions and all of your orders with me are fulfilled to our mutual satisfaction. Absent exceptional circumstances (like where I am required to store data for legal reasons) I will generally delete your personal information upon request. (3) Complain. If you reside in the EU and wish to raise a concern about my use of your information (and without prejudice to any other rights you may have), you have the right to do so with your local data protection authority.
Information I Collect: To fulfill your order, you must provide me with certain information (which you authorized Etsy to provide to me), such as your name, email address, postal address, payment information, and the details of the product that you’re ordering. You may also choose to provide me with additional personal information, if you contact me directly.

Why I Need Your Information and How I Use It: I rely on a number of legal bases to collect, use, and share your information as needed to provide my services, such as: (1) when I use your information to fulfill your order, to settle disputes, or to provide customer support; (2) when you have provided your affirmative consent, which you may revoke at any time, such as by signing up for my mailing list; (3) if necessary to comply with a legal obligation or court order or in connection with a legal claim, such as retaining information about your purchases if required by tax law; and (4) as necessary for the purpose of my legitimate interests, if those legitimate interests are not overridden by your rights or interests, such as 1) providing and improving my services. Information Sharing and Disclosure: I share your personal information for very limited reasons and in limited circumstances, as follows: (1) Etsy. I share information with Etsy as necessary to provide you my services and comply with my obligations under both the Etsy Seller Policy and Etsy Terms of Use. (2) Service providers. I engage certain trusted third parties to perform functions and provide services to my shop, such as delivery companies. I will share your personal information with these third parties, but only to the extent necessary to perform these services. (3) Compliance with laws. Data Retention: I retain your personal information only for as long as necessary to comply with my legal and regulatory obligations, to resolve disputes, and to enforce my agreements. I generally keep your data for five years. If you leave a review, I will save it, stripped of all personal data, for an unlimited amount of time.
