Everything from Constellation & Co is of high quality. It's clear that so much care and love goes into everything they make. With the craziness of the holidays, I was accidentally sent the wrong print. Sara let me keep the print and sent me the correct one immediately. I will absolutely buy from this shop again.
Using ink and paper to connect people.
Everything we do is inspired by conviction, craftsmanship, and community. Yeah, we make beautiful things, but our inmost desire is to facilitate meaningful connections, to use the time-honored tradition of letterpress to bring people together. We celebrate tailor-made over generic, heritage over novelty, and process over expediency.
Every day I walk into the studio, flip the light switch, tie my apron, and get to work. The studio is a special space—it is the fruition of a lot of dreams and hopes and hard work. It's a place that feels like home. It's a place infused with heritage. Our building is rich with history—it’s ornate & strong, built in the wave of new construction after the 1889 Seattle fire. I love the exposed brick, the aged wood floors, and the huge window and the natural light it lets in. But what I love most are the possibilities that this place holds. This is why I do what I love—and every day here is a blessing.
We take this blessing seriously. Our work is truly a manifestation of our philosophy: to use ink and paper to connect people.
We bring old school to another level. This is Gutenberg. This is the eighteenth century. This is corsets and petticoats and embroidery. All of our products are letterpress printed by hand. Our equipment is time-tested and well-worn, but we have restored everything with love—from rust and grime back to pristine printing condition. All of our presses are foot or hand powered and completely hand fed. Each sheet of paper goes through the press one at a time, and once through for each color printed. Same goes for type setting. We use traditional wood and lead type and carefully hand set one letter at a time. To say this is a labor of love is an understatement—but we wouldn’t have it any other way.
Let me introduce you to two of our prized presses:
Meet Wendy, a 20th Century Reliance Washington-Style Iron Handpress from late 1800s, manufactured by Paul Shneidewend & Co. in Chicago, Illinois. She’s over six feet tall, and is perfect for poster & broadside printing. She was purchased in Vancouver, BC and part of a dramatic border crossing story. As our largest and newest press, she is our pride and joy.
And there is also Josephine, an 8x12 New Style Chandler & Price platen press from early 1900s. She has a big, beautiful flywheel (rotating mechanical device that is used to store rotational energy), and spins in perpetual motion while I print. Josephine was our first full-sized press, and she is essential to our story as a company—we built the business on her back. She was in terrible shape when we bought her. It took countless hours with wire brushes & WD40 to scrub out the rust and bring Josephine back to printing shape.
We like to think of our cards as no matter what, no matter when cards. These sentiments transcend occasions. You are home to me. You’re my favorite. I like you. These are anytime cards. Additionally, our cards are ripe for framing. We like to think of them as very portable, very affordable, handmade art.
Many of our products feature traditional wood engravings by Sara. A majority of our products are printed with hand-set wood & lead type.
All of our products are designed and produced with the environment in mind, using a selection of 100% recycled and high recycled content papers and envelopes. Each of our individual cards are packaged in clear sleeves to protect them from handling while allowing a clear view of the letterpress quality of each piece. Our boxed sets are packaged in recycled content kraft paper boxes.
Owner, Maker, Designer, Letterpress Printer
This whole thing was my kooky dream. I’m the owner/operator, graphic designer, letterpress printer, and jack-of-all things that need to get done.
I prep and ship orders for our awesome customers! My favorite part is choosing fun tape and writing sweet notes.
I am co-founder, husband, designer, letterpress printer, and secret art director. I help out with design, critiques, and moving heavy things.
As in every small business, I wear a variety of different hats. I'm the bookkeeper/accountant and also help with packaging, shipping and monitoring the Etsy store.
