Simple, Modern Jewelry with Scandinavian influence. Perfect for self-assurance, confidence and contemporary, yet timeless beauty.

ABOUT ME - I'm Laura, the heart and hands of Copper Woods Jewelry where I design jewelry with the Scandinavian influence of simple, modern style complimented by a timeless, feminine feel. Specializing in hoop, pull-through, dangle and stud earrings, bangle and cuff bracelets, wrap, stacking, spinner and band rings, each piece is meticulously handcrafted by my 2 hands. If you're passing through the lakes region of New Hampshire, you may hear my saw buzzing, my hammers tapping or the steady hum of my polishing wheel. My studio sits there on our little piece of the world in a big barn beside my husband's woodshop. Feel free to say hello, but just so you know - the two of us reserve 4:00 for our shared break ;*)

MY MISSION - I believe true beauty lies within the folds of self-assurance, genuine kindness and of course, love. My goal is to foster these in everyone who wears my jewelry. Styles are like dandelions in the wind - gone in the blink of an eye, so I create jewelry with simple, minimal, clean lines to allow a woman to remain true to her own style while feeling self-assured knowing she's on-trend, yet timelessly beautiful. Self-assurance fosters kindness and kindness comes from love. Is there any better way to step into this world?

MY APPROACH - The most simple design can make the boldest statement while other designs seek beautiful definition through textures, finishes, patinas, stampings and/or semi-precious stones or carefully chosen beads. This is why I approach every piece with an eye for how it is truly meant to be.

THE BEGINNINGS - METAL WORK via A DRUNK DRIVER - Well, not literally - but a drunk driver's actions did play a role. A car crash caused by a drunk driver left me w/8 malunion pelvic fractures (incorrectly healed), internal injuries & 160 stitches in my face at the age of 17. W/God's help, I went on to live a life blessed by 3 beautiful daughters & a supportive husband. At 42, a surgery ended in disability and I was suddenly at home without purpose. With an interest in beading and a life with busy hands, my family encouraged me to take a class in metal jewelry and I found a wonderful place of solace. While immersed in the endless possibilities of metal work, I was mentally removed from physical pain - I fell in love!

Now, I just needed a place to explore where I could rest as needed, so I took my passion home, packed up my sewing area and made room for jewelry tools - of which I had none. An old bowling pin became a mandrel, a trailer ball worked as my anvil, my hubby's sandpaper became sanding sticks and that small scrap of lumber was carved into a makeshift bench pin. Learning how to control the bends and stretches within metal work, I learned to count every hammer blow as I struck the copper lying against an old, rusted up steel block. Finally, a new jeweler's saw in hand, I sat down w/excitement to hone my craft and proceeded to snap every blade within minutes of inserting it until finally, with practice, I found my rhythm, but mastering the art of soldering w/a low temp creme brulee torch was another story. I needed some real tools, so instead of that new sweater, I bought hammers. Instead of a new coat, I ordered files and finally, a proper torch set up.

LIFE GOES ON, BUT HISTORY REMAINS - Copper Woods Jewelry got its name from my paternal grandparents' story. My American grandfather traveled to Chile to take a position of a foreman in the Chile Copper Mines where he was injured. The Chilean nurse who cared for him became my grandmother. The Scandinavian influence comes from the other side of my heritage - my 100% Swedish maternal grandparents!

Now, all these years later, I sit within my own workshop at an ergonomic workbench built by my husband and these old files and hammers that once felt awkward rest easily and comfortably in my hands. AND, I can’t even remember the last time I broke a saw blade.

Exploration fosters discovery and creativity, so I explored – a lot! It is through those explorations and those poorly done or wildly artistic pieces of my past that I honed my craft. Eventually, though, I returned to what I'm naturally drawn to - those simple, minimal, clean lines that I love to compliment with symmetry and the occasional bit of unbalance to draw the eye.

Welcome to Copper Woods Jewelry - enjoy! Be kind and remember to look for the bluebird. It's always there - even in the midst of pain & sorrow. We just have to look.

Thank you! - Laura

Why Gold FILLED vs. plated or vermeil?

GOLD FILLED is used to offer you the highest quality gold product, next to solid gold, at an affordable price. Unlike gold plated or vermeil, it will not chip, tarnish or peel if given a bit of care (see care instruction above) & is safe for sensitive skin & allergies.

Also known as 'rolled' gold, gold filled has many layers of 14k gold heat bonded to a base metal at high temperatures, creating a very thick coating for a high quality gold product.

GOLD PLATED consists of a very THIN layer of gold electroplated onto a base metal, usually brass or steel. This option easily wears, chips and peels.

GOLD VERMEIL/DIPPED - made as gold plated except the base metal is typically sterling silver. This option will also wear, chip and peel.

Is green coloring on skin normal or am I allergic to this metal?

Copper & brass may leave a greenish color on skin which is not harmful & is easily removed w/soap & water. If bothersome to you, please consider choosing a different metal.

♦♦♦ BODY CHEMISTRY
• affects how skin reacts to certain metals.
• can cause metal to oxidize more quickly on some than others.
• for some people there is no reaction at all.
• trying different metals shows which work best w/your chemistry.

CWJ has no knowledge of your skin or body chemistry, so you are best at choosing metals that works for you!

Although most reactions are not harmful, if desired, discontinue wear should they occur & as noted above, consider a different metal choice in the future.

What is an 'applied' patina?

Often to define hammered/stamped textures, color is intentionally added to a metal's surface. I believe the beauty of oxidized metal lies in the process, so I use my own signature technique to ensure gorgeous shine and longer lasting color

Creating uniquely beautiful pieces each time, one round of oxidation may produce slight variation in color and hue from the next w/each metal's reaction defined below:

COPPER: medium - dark chocolates
BRASS: antiqued, often slightly green effect
STERLING: light - dark gray, almost black

CWJ's APPLIED PATINA OPTIONS
LIGHT OXIDATION - brushed to reveal the metal beneath.
DARK OXIDATION - left untouched for a striking, industrial feel.

*Applied patina adds a small price increase

Is there a protective finish on your jewelry?

♥NO protective finish remains on jewelry unless it's not worn - & what fun is that?

Having used a protective coating in the past, I found it to cause a harsh color change over time when compared to items left untreated. Therefore, I discontinued use & do not use any protective finish due to this finding as well as the statement above♥ & am currently updating listings that may say otherwise.

If you prefer a shiny, new finish, please see 'How do I care for my jewelry and prevent oxidation?" in FAQ above.
