5 out of 5 starsLisa was fantastic! I messaged her to see if she had some nice pieces of oak or ash wood that weren't listed on her page and she got back to me within hours with pictures of some lovely ash planks with live edges. I asked if she could cut the plank to measure which she happily did (and sanded each piece!). The pieces were priced very reasonably at £30 for all 4 and were posted via tracked delivery within days (each piece individually wrapped well so as not to get damaged in transit). I'm really happy with my purchase and the excellent customer service from Lisa and will definitely be returning! All the best, Alice

Coppicing in the woods.
The coppicing came first.
The coppicing came first.
I never intended to start a business. I was recuperating from a dog bite received during my then dog walking and pet sitting business. With a shared interest in the outdoors my dad invited me to join him for a couple of days in an NRW woodland that he was restoring into a working hazel coppice. I was hooked!
After the first winter the idea of products bore out of a hate of waste and ever-increasing piles of wood!
Fast forward 9 years and I now spend my winters restoring a local 9 acre ancient semi natural woodland, turning the dark, dank, unhealthy hazel wood into healthy tree’s, letting the light in to aid other woodland flora to flourish and providing food and habitat for a variety of wildlife. I do this for free. The money the business makes is from the products I sell only.
My life has become very seasonal. My winters are spent in the woods, coppicing, creating both a 'wood crop' and a natural habitat for many woodland flora and fauna. Spring and summer are when I move into the workshop and get creative; working with both the wood I have removed from the woodland and other bought in local timber and reclaimed hardwoods.
For the most part, I can tell you exactly which woodland the item you have purchased originally came from! If it’s made from hazel, I can practically take you to the tree itself! Although practical, my products are mostly bought emotionally, customers fall in love with a piece that resonates with them and knowing the history of the piece is part of that love affair. Even the pieces that I make from bought in timber have a history; the local timber yard I buy from will know the woodland it came out of or the country of origin. Even the reclamation yard I buy my reclaimed wood from has a story, a social enterprise which teach adults with learning difficulties woodworking.
Today, Cottage Coppicing is an amalgamation of traditional rural skills and contemporary crafts.
