Science and Fantasy
I started out in the sciences and a degree in chemistry from MIT. I was working as a product development chemist at Gillette when they had a book fair at lunch one day. I picked up a book on quilting and decided I wanted to make a quilt for my mom for Christmas. My mother sewed and crafted a lot during my childhood and my father is a graphic artist and illustrator. So I had an interest in the arts and had taken a variety of classes and courses over the years. But when I discovered quilting, I instantly felt that I had discovered my medium.
I found myself more and more involved with the quilts that I was making. I would get home from work and go straight up to my sewing room. I was completely hooked. I transitioned from patchwork bed quilts to applique and free form wall hangings.
In 2002, we moved to Austin TX and I started The Crafty Monkey. I set up at local artists markets and shows and concentrated on learning my craft. I established several accessories lines and concentrated on purses and headbands for a few years.
A decade later, I am now mostly working on the quilted wall art (science themed, landscapes, musicians), with bursts of accessories lines (ex. headbands, play crowns, purses). I sell online, wholesale, and the occasional art or craft show.
