SAORI weave in progress.
-
My new fiber arts hobby - SAORI weaving. It’s so meditative and liberating.
Motherhood reawakened the creator in me.
Growing up in the Santa Cruz Mountains, I formed a deep appreciation for nature and organic beauty. A product of my environment, I was always independent – exploring the woods and falling deep into books and my artsy projects.
Somewhere along the way, I devoted my creative energy to high tech, which impacted my education and career path in undeniable ways. But it also sidetracked me from my low-tech creative outlets. I need a balance to be happy.
After my first child was born, I had to find something quiet to do during nap time and in the evenings. One beautiful afternoon in Santa Cruz, I fell in love with Manos del Uruguay yarn. I had to have this yarn but had no idea how to knit or crochet. So I learned to crochet. Quickly, I was making more products than I could personally wear or gift. I started selling items on Etsy and loved it. While shopping for yarn, I discovered all these fabulous fabric designers and bought a ton of fabric before I knew how to sew or quilt... Then came the sewing machine and I started quilting. The rest is yarn and fabric hoarding history.
During the day, I am still a marketeer in high tech, but there's something incredibly satisfying about creating a beautiful and tangible product with my own two hands. It's a feeling that no pixels can fulfill.
Now that I've brought to life two amazing little humans (and am done making babies), I can redirect my creator energy to my hobbies.
Fiber artists and teachers who inspire me include Gloria Loughan, David Taylor, Kaffe Fassett, and Sue Spargo.
