Welcome to Crewelwhorled!
My embroidered jewelry and artwork is all hand made by me using stitchery and techniques I learned at my mother's knee. Because embroidery is such a time consuming process, I make sure that every piece I make is made to last from the best materials I can find.
I hope you see something that you love. All items in the shop are handmade by me in our pet-free, smoke-free, but decidedly not chaos-free home. I offer free fist class shipping throughout the US--even around the world on many items. If you need a faster shipping option, contact me, and I'll make a custom listing for you with expedited shipping.
If you're new to Etsy, you should know that creating your account is free, and buying something is fairly straightforward. Here's a link: http://www.etsy.com/help_guide_registering.php
Also, you may be interested to know that can buy with your credit card without opening a Paypal account.
FREE SHIPPING OFFER. All of my items ship free throughout the United States and many ship free everywhere. But from now through December 18, order three or more items and I will upgrade your shipping from First Class Mail to PRIORITY MAIL. (All items must be going to the same place though.) The best part is, it happens automatically--no codes to remember or facebook pages to join. Just buy three items, and I'll take care of the shipping!
Curious about me or this jewelry? Check out the Profile and Shop Policies pages. (Links at right.) Even more curious? I'm on Facebook:

Feel free to contact me with any questions--I love to talk to people about making stuff.

About crewelwhorled
Embroidery with a modern twist
Crewelwhorled started eleven years ago at the Urbana, Illinois farmers' market. I made little embroidered pins with pears and dogs on them, and I would set up my tiny table and sell them to my neighbors every Saturday. When I found I couldn't replace what I was selling during the week, I knew I had something good (and that $25 for a pin that took me four hours to make might be a little low).
Since then, Crewelwhorled has expanded to include earrings, pendants, some artwork for the wall or a tabletop. At Christmastime, I add hand-stitched felt ornaments--the perfect combination of tradition and sparkle, with a more modern look.
Crewelwhorled has always been small. Everything is made by hand, by me--some heavily embroidered pendants take weeks to make. Because I put a lot of time into the pieces, I take care to use the best possible materials I can find--sterling silver findings, silk and high-quality mercerized cotton. I incorporate a lot of artisan-dyed threads, so a given piece might have twenty or thirty different colors in it. I take care with the structure of the work as well--whether that means sewing the silver elements into the structure of the piece, or securing the beading with three passes of thread. With proper care, these pieces will last for generations.

With drastically reduced hours at the keyboard (the little one kept coming up and mashing on it), I needed a new creative outlet. I'd recently moved away from two dream jobs: editing a paper for visitors to my hometown, and working for a nationally known rug maker.
The writing I could do anywhere, but I really missed making the rugs. We worked on floor to ceiling frames, making ten or more rugs at a time, some of them 8'X 7' and larger. I needed something much smaller in scale--something I could shove in my pocket as I raced to keep my toddler from knocking the sugar canister on the floor.
So I started making pins. I love the way my pins tend to baffle people at first. Some think they're ceramic or enamel; some people are surprised to discover that they're jewelry--they think they're little works of art--so I always sell them with a frame, just in case you want to keep them out and show them off.
That's my story. So far anyway--two kids later I still feel happiest when I've got hoop in hand, working out a new design.
